STILLWATER – In a year where Oklahoma State football is 1-6 and 0-4 in the Big 12 standings, the Cowboys have yet to earn even a Big 12 Player of the Week mention. Redshirt freshman defensive end Wendell Gregory has raised eyebrows and is now on the watch list for the top honor in Division I FBS for a freshman football player.

The Maxwell Football Club has added five players to their watch list for the Shaun Alexander National Freshman Player of the Year including Gregory. Also, added to the list are Hawai’i quarterback Micah Alejado, Ohio State running back Bo Jackson (name is a blast from the past), running back Nate Sheppard of Duke, and Oregon corerback Brandon Finney.

Gregory started his season with a blast with a school-record three sacks in one-half against UT-Martin in the opener. On the season, Gregory has 9.5 tackles-for-loss and three sacks. He has 21 total tackles, 15 of those unassisted. He also has a pass defended, a fumble forced, and four QB hurries.

The 6-3, 255-pound redshirt freshman is from Walton High School in Marietta, Ga. He was at South Carolina as a freshman before transferring to Oklahoma State.

Besides the opener against UT-Martin, Gregory’s next biggest game statistically came at Arizona with five total tackles, three tackles-for-loss, a pass deflected and the fumble he forced.
