Oklahoma State and Cannen Cunningham Have Mutually Parted Ways
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State is losing its second Cunningham in as many weeks. Oklahoma State and assistant coach Cannen Cunningham have agreed to mutually part ways. The move was first reported by Marshall Scott. Mike Boynton confirmed the move on Friday morning.
Cunningham, who spent the last two seasons on Mike Boynton’s staff, was originally brought in prior to the 2019-20 season, but is leaving to help manage his brother, the projected No. 1 2021 NBA Draft pick, Cade Cunningham. Cade announced a week ago today his intentions to declare for the draft.
There were many people who believed the older of the two Cunningham’s was brought in to help land the younger of the two, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2020 class. However, Cannen’s contributions extended much past his recruiting abilities.
Cannen, who played college ball at SMU, worked primarily with the Cowboy big men, Kalib Boone and Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe this season, and Cameron McGriff during the 2019-20 season. We saw Boone’s game develop as the season went along as he finished the season averaging 9.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, a near-three-point boost from his play in January.
With the older of the two Cunningham’s also out the door, a possible replacement is already being predicted. According to Sean Paul, a writer for MakingTheMadness.com, Boynton is looking to add Creighton assistant Terrence Rencher, who joined the Bluejay program around the same time as Cunningham joined the Cowboys back in 2019. Terrence has also spent time at New Mexico, Texas State, Tulsa and Sam Houston State and San Diego State. Rencher also played college ball at Texas from 1991-95.
Boynton and Co. recently extended an offer to Tyty Washington, a four-star point guard out of Compass Prep in Chandler, AZ, the No. 30 ranked prospect in the 2021 class who decommited from Creighton back on March 11. Certainly an interesting tie back to Rencher should Boynton make the hire.
