STILLWATER – Saturday in Stillwater is senior day for Oklahoma State as they play host to Iowa State. This season didn’t go the way anyone associated with Cowboy football wanted, from the coaches and administration to the fanbase or the Big 12. It comes after a disappointing season in 2024, leading to the firing of Mike Gundy and then-defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

But the people most disappointed are the players. This year certainly didn’t go the way they wanted it to, especially the seniors. The program will be honoring 20 seniors on Saturday, 12 of which who have been with the Cowboys for at least two years and eight who transferred in this year.

Interim head coach Doug Meacham met with the media on earlier on Monday and was asked about this group of seniors, what it means to go through senior day and what he told them.

"You should want to give it your all and go out the right way. My message is about this; it will be a collective effort. Play like there is no tomorrow and do it for these guys and send them out with a memory that will last forever,” Meacham said. He continued with, “Those guys don't have any motives other than wanting to play football and wanting to win a game. They are at the end of the road, in terms of playing football here. Hopefully, some of them will get a shot at the next level, but it is always good to have all those guys pass on all those experiences. If the younger guys will listen to what they have to say, they will learn a lot and probably bypass some things you may have run head-on into had you not listen to those guys that have been down the road you're traveling. It is good to listen to those guys. It is always nice to have an older guy speak up and be a leader. Generally, when an older guy that has been through it speaks up, people listen."

Of the 12 players, seven have spent their entire careers in Stillwater, with most contributing quite a bit on the Pokes’ run to beating a ranked OU and BYU and a berth in the 2023 Big 12 title game, and a win over Texas A&M in a bowl game.

While they didn’t play but a handful of snaps collectively, this group was also in Stillwater for the 2021 season when the Pokes went 12-2, beating Texas, OU and Notre Dame, and the 7-0 start to the 2022 season when the Pokes were top 10 in the nation in just about every statistical category before injuries derailed the season.

So, this group has been a part of a lot of success over the years and will hopefully have passed those experiences down to the current group of freshmen and redshirt freshmen. There’s quite a bit of talent amongst the youngsters, a group the new coaching staff will hopefully be able to retain.

“We’ve had to be there a lot because there has been a lot of change in this organization and just throughout college football,” said senior safety Parker Robertson. “So, you just got to say it's not always been like this. There's things changing all around, like you just gotta go back to the fundamentals of just like, hey, this is not it's going to get better, it's going to brighten up. I mean, we're on the little downside right now, but they just got to keep looking forward to it, and it's gonna get better.”

Saturday’s game against Iowa State is scheduled for 11 a.m. and being televised on ESPNU. For this group of seniors’ sake, I hope Boone Pickens Stadium is packed one last time with the Loyal and True of Oklahoma State.
