STILLWATER – Oklahoma State football coach Eric Morris named another defensive addition to his coaching staff Wednesday, hiring former Cowboy student-athlete and coach Greg Richmond as defensive line coach.

A standout at Oklahoma State during his playing days, Richmond was a four-year Cowboy letterman from 2000-03, earning first team All-Big 12 honors in 2003. He remains on OSU's single-season and career top 10 lists for quarterback sacks.

In addition to his playing career, Richmond also had two previous stints on the OSU football staff. He served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach from 2007-08 and was OSU's defensive line coach from 2018-22.

He worked for Morris at North Texas in 2025 and has worked with new OSU defensive coordinator Skyler Cassityeach of the past two seasons, at UNT in 2025 and at Sam Houston in 2024.

A 2003 OSU graduate, Richmond has more than 15 years of coaching experience, 14 of which were spent working with defensive linemen.

All university hires are pending completion of a background check.

Great hire. Never understood why he was let go, as the D-lines when Richmond coached always played well! Glad to see one of our own return!

I'm wondering what the story is behind him being DE coach for this DC the past 2 seasons, and now promoted to DL coach, I assume that is a promotion. Not that he doesn't deserve it, or isn't qualified for it, but what happened at UNT DT coach, and why didn't he come too? or rather... under DC Cassity, UNT had a DT coach and a DE coach, but not DL coach... why the change for OSU?

What am I missing here sports fans?

What is the advantage (if any) of having a DL coach rather than a DT coach and a DE coach? Is it semantics, or is it something he's learned in his young stint as a DC, or is there actually something that is "coaching structural" in have one person in charge of the overall DL?

I honestly don't know, the DT and DE techniques are obviously different, and DL coaches usually have some assistance with DEs or some such, but is there actually more to this type of an organizational change?
