STILLWATER – Oklahoma State Softball’s Jayelle Austin was tabbed the inaugural Big 12 Conference Co-Freshman of the Week after her standout performances on opening weekend, it was announced today.

Austin was named the Co-Freshman of the week alongside UCF’s Ava Stuewe. The weekly award is new to the conference this year, joining the Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week honors.

Austin etched her name into the history books on opening day against Stanford after hitting a two-run shot over the right field wall for the first home run ever recorded in Stanford Softball Stadium history.

After notching a hit in the first three contests, Austin was moved into the leadoff spot for OSU’s remaining two games on the weekend, where she thrived. The Owasso, Oklahoma, native became the seventh freshman in OSU history to hit a grand slam (the third to do so on opening weekend) with her four-RBI blast against California on Feb. 7.

Austin slashed .385/.467/.923 in her first weekend of collegiate softball and drove in seven runs.

Austin and the Cowgirls return to action in Clearwater, Florida, for the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational from Feb. 12-14, where OSU will play Georgia, LSU, Texas A&M, UCLA and Duke. All of OSU’s contests will be televised on the ESPN family of networks and can be heard on the Varsity Network app with Ryan Breeden on the call.
