Jake Springfield's Cowboy Blood Runs Deeper Than Himself
The 2020 season has brought many surprises to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, some of which were good, and certainly some of which were not. One of the more pleasant surprises of the Cowboys season though is the rise and growth of Jake Springfield, Oklahoma State’s new left tackle.
Coming into this season, Springfield was not a starter, and in fact, he was not even on scholarship. After some roster shuffles and hard work by Springfield, he was awarded a scholarship, which was quickly followed by a chance to get significant playing time. He took his chance and ran with it and has surpassed all expectations at the left tackle position.
Springfield attended Flower Mound High School in the North Texas region. Before deciding to walk on at Oklahoma State, he was once committed to West Texas A&M, but if you know Springfield or his family, you would have felt pretty comfortable betting he would end up in Stillwater.
Around the time Springfield was making his college decision, his sister, Sydney, was on the Oklahoma State softball field. She transferred to Stillwater just a few months before Jake made up his mind, but this was not his only connection to the Cowboys.
As the title says, Jake Springfield’s Cowboy blood runs deeper than himself.
Springfield told the media Tuesday afternoon that “everyone on my dad’s side of the family went and graduated from Oklahoma State, so I’ve been a Cowboy fan for life.”
“I was raised wearing the orange and yelling ‘Go Pokes’, I went to a couple games and my grandparents have season tickets. I don’t think they’ve missed a game in like 20 years. I have always been around OSU and I was really excited I had the chance to come here.”
Springfield talked about being committed to West Texas A&M, but he said “I knew deep in my heart that I wanted to come here and this would be the best place for me.”
It has to be interesting for Jake’s grandparents, who have been to every game for the last 20 years simply because they love Oklahoma State. But now, they have an extra interest at play, and one that outweighs just their fandom. Its family.
“They’re always fun after the game,” said Springfield. “They will be standing there with my parents when I go to meet them, they’re always there wearing orange. It’s always fun talking to them and telling me they saw me in the game and what they saw me do. It’s been really fun talking to them.”
Jake Springfield has had an unusual path to being a starting left tackle for a power 5 school, and not only that, but he seems to have a very bright future not only in Stillwater, but beyond. A few years ago, I’m not sure I could have told you Jake was going to become a starter at a high level and become a name every fan knew, but I do know one thing. If I would have to guess a school he was going to do it at, my answer would have immediately been Oklahoma State. There was no other path for Jake, this is where he belongs.
