TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma State smashed four home runs en route to a 7-3 win over Bedlam rival and 11th-ranked Oklahoma Tuesday night at ONEOK Field.
The game was halted due to severe weather and deemed an official contest in the bottom of the eighth inning.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 23-14, while OU fell to 24-12. In 14 seasons under head coach Josh Holliday, OSU is now 38-16 against the Sooners.
Campbell Smithwick went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers, while Kollin Ritchie and Garrett Shull also went deep for the Pokes.
Brennan Phillips picked up the win in relief of starter TP Wentworth as the senior southpaw worked 3 2/3 innings to improve to 2-2; he struck out four and allowed just two hits.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Following a Brock Thompson double, Ritchie crushed his 21st home run of the season over the wall in right-center field. Two batters later, it was Smithwick delivering a solo bomb to make the score 3-0.
With Wentworth keeping the Sooners off the scoreboard, Smithwick extended the OSU lead with his second homer of the game in the fourth, this one carrying over the wall in center field and giving the Pokes a 4-0 advantage.
The power surge continued later in the inning when Shull smacked a two-run shot to right field to push the lead to six.
Wentworth kept OU off the scoreboard over the first 3 1/3 innings before leaving the game with an apparent injury in the fourth. The lefty struck out three and allowed two hits.
OSU extended its lead in the sixth as Smithwick collected an infield single, stole second, then took advantage of two wild pitches to plate the Cowboys' seventh run.
The Sooners avoided the shutout in the eighth, drawing back-to-back walks to open the frame before a three-run homer by Jaxon Willits.
The Cowboys return to action Friday at 6 p.m. when they open a series against Kansas at O'Brate Stadium.
