STILLWATER – The first spring game of the Eric Morris era is officially in the books. It was an Orange vs. Black game, with the offense, the orange team, winning 42-33 in front of an estimated 13,000 fans.
The first live look fans had of quarterback Drew Mestemaker was an interception caught by defensive back Cam Epps. Not very memorable and people wanted to move on quickly and Drew gave them that as he finished the day going 13-of-20 for 260 yards with three touchdowns. That included a 98-yard bomb to Chris Barnes, who finished the day with four receptions for 141 yards and the lone touchdown.
Instead of rotating two different squads out onto the field, it was an offense vs. defense game, which meant a good rotation of quarterbacks for Morris. Grant Jordan was the primary backup as he went 4-for-8 for 57 yards. He also had three carries for negative seven yards.
Broderick Vehrs went 7-for-7 for 70 yards and one touchdown, while Luke Tepas was 5-for-8 for 14 yards.
Tre Page III finished with the most rushing yards on the day with five carries for 45 yards, while starter Caleb Hawkins had five carries for 18 yards and one touchdown.
Wyatt Young and Justin Bowick caught the other two touchdowns from Mestemaker as Young had two catches for 45 yards and a score and Bowick two catches for 26 yards and the first touchdown from Mestemaker.
Defensively, defensive lineman Jaleel Johnson had one of the best days as he finished with four total tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks. Ethan Wesloski, LaDainian Fields and Tom Watts all finished with four tackles apiece.
Kicker Sam Keltner finished the day with two field goals, one from 45 yards and one from 33 yards.
