Oklahoma State Drops Season Opener 24-10 to Tulsa

TULSA, OK – The Eric Morris era at Oklahoma State started off with a loss as the Cowboys fell to Tulsa on the road, 24-10.

With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 0-1 to start the season. The last time Tulsa has beaten OSU two games in a row was a35-7 loss in Stillwater in 1951 and a 23-21 loss in Tulsa in 1952. It was actually three in a row as TU won 27-13 in Tulsa in 1950.

The game came down to the 4:24 mark in the fourth quarter. Trailing 24-10 on 4th and 9, a pass from Drew Mestemaker to Justin Bowick was incomplete, but the Golden Hurricane were called for defensive pass interference to give the Pokes 1st and 10 from the 12-yard line. However, on the very next play, his pass intended for Bowick was intercepted in the end zone by Zach Williams.

It took much longer for the Cowboys to get into the end zone than people thought as quarterback Drew Mestemaker would connect with Justin Bowick from 16 yards out with 1:52 left in the third quarter to make it a 17-10 game. Prior to that, Sam Keltner put the Pokes on the board with a 35-yard field goal with 2:04 left in the second quarter to make it a 3-3 ball game.

Mestemaker finished the game going 29-of-49 for 241 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions and five carries for three yards.

Caleb Hawkins led the Pokes in rushing with 18 carries for 79 yards, while Wyatt Young led the team in receiving with eight receptions for 84 yards. Bowick finished with two catches for 22 yards and the lone touchdown. 

As a team, the Cowboys combined for 368 total yards, 241 through the air and 127 on the ground. That’s 3.4 yards per carry and an average of 4.3 yards per play, while TU posted 361 total yards, 227 through the air and 134 on the ground.
