Post Spring Position Analysis: Cowboy Backs

okay.... well.... I was hoping for more... not very encouraging, IMO, and not very insightful

mostly just a lot of superlatives strung together into an article... like this tidbit:

"The Cowboy Back position is hard working and needs to help this season by becoming higher producing."

WTH? That's it? That's all we have to say about the group? Hard working and needs to help by becoming "higher producing"? sounds more like a politicians campaign promise than an analyst's evaluation.

we have one kid that has played, and he's okay as a FB, but just barely. We have a kid that couldn't make it at DE so we moved him to offense, but he's not very fast and doesn't have any experience. We have a JUCO kid who played on a team with a guy who was good, and he's from CA, so that's good too, I guess.

I'm actually starting to sweat bullets..... this offense is starting to sound very uncertain. New OLine, starting RBs that couldn't suit up for Spring or we've never heard of, QB that has remained healthy 1 season in his entire HS and college career, a bunch of WRs that couldn't previously break the lineup, but will now be good, and some Cowboy backs that we've scraped together just to fill the position. Did I recap that correctly?

Guys, I really don't intend to be a Debbie Downer, but I'm have big-time doubts about our offense, especially one that couldn't really get it done last year in a very down year for the conference.

I am so, so, so glad that we have the OOC warm up games.... we're going to need them.

Crossing my fingers that the defense can carry us to a post season contest.

It will work out.....and easier than last season as the OL is better/deeper. That makes the rb's better. All of that helps the qb and connecting to receivers better. If you somewhat liked our offense last year, you'll like this one more.

I felt the spring game was the most encouraging I've seen in several years. I believe this team will be in the top 2-3 in the league. Spencer threw the ball better than he has since he hit campus. Shane looked very good as well.
Cali if you would come Stillwater more than once every 3 decades you could decide for yourself.

I had planned to be back .... but then COVID, and work issues came up, and now my #1 reason for traveling back to Cowboy Country, my dad, passed away last month at 103. (a good long life, lucid and well up till the end)

Now when I return it's going to have to be specifically for Cowboys. I'm thinking about trying to head up to Boise, but it's still about a 12 hour drive.

I'm going to retire in December, so long term hopefully get out of Kalifornia and find someplace closer.


The jury is still out on the OLine for me, I'm not sure how we can lose Jenkins and the center, and expect "better". We had some weird health and experience problems last year, so I don't think it could possibly be worse.

by all reports, Coach Rattay has help the QBs with their footwork, and I hear all the "claims" that Sanders is better, but personally I'll need to see him under center (so to speak) before I'm convinced... the Miami DLine was short handed, and Spring games don't show us much (if they did, everybody would be raving about Shane, not Spencer).

I'm going to be rooting for whomever is on the field at every given moment. Every B12 team should be better (much better), except for KU and possibly BU.... but they aren't the teams that beat us last year. Texas and their new coach might be suspect, but ISU is not the same team that we somehow beat last year.

I'm really happy that we have the preseason games to warm up. Although Tulsa gave us fits last year, and Boise on the road must be taken seriously. @texas, @ISU, @morgontown, @lubbick

we'd better be 11-0 going into Thanksgiving, or this season will be yet another bust.

Cali, don't expect much improvement. We had this discussion on another thread. Until we find a kid that can block & catch the D knows what we are doing based on which CW is on the field. Carter did look improved catching the ball in the spring game, so that will help.

Jarwin's big plays came when he ran the center seam and a LB didn't account for him. Then he was all alone 10-15 yards deep in the center of the field and he would catch the ball.

Yeah, I remember, but I don't necessarily agree.

Back in the old days they knew what we might do depending on whether we put in a FB or a TE. (or 5 wides, etc.), so I don't think that is much of a factor.

ISU put in 3 TEs last year, and so folks knew what might be coming, but it was still hard to stop, because they had recruited good TEs, not try to put leftovers into a hybrid-spot, which I feel like OSU is doing with this CW nonsense.

I remember when Jace Sternberger , from Kingfisher, who came out of NEO and ended up at Texas A&M and made a big impact his first and only season with the Aggies then ended up in Green Bay. This young man seems to be in the mold of Sternberger and Blake Jarwin as a more athletic receiver first type of Cowboy Back who could provide another weapon.

I hope that you're right.... he was a TE though... not one of these CW thingy's.
