Defense has been a pleasant surprise for Cowboys fans so far this season. Texas Tech transfer cornerback Mo Horn has quickly become a familiar name in the secondary.
Horn made an early impact in the Cowboys 59-0 win over Murray State on Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium.
After the Racers picked up a first down on the first play from scrimmage quarterback Jim Ogle threw a screen pass to the sideline which Horn blew up for the first of his three tackles for loss. The only thing that went wrong with the play was that Horn lost his helmet making the tackle and had to miss the next play.
“Coach Morris preached on playing fast,” Horn said. “When I saw the play it was a no brainer. It triggered me to go and make that play and do what I was brought here to do.”
Horn also had a pass breakup on a third down which forced a Murray State punt. He was a major part of the defense holding the Racers to 160 total yards and 0-12 on third down. It was also the first shutout recorded by the Cowboys since a 21-0 win over Texas Tech in 2021 and the first at home since the 84-0 win over Savannah State in 2012.
“Early in the game we could tell that their game plan was going to be to not drop back and pass a ton,” coach Eric Morris said. “Our efficiency on first and second downs set up some third and medium and third and long and gave us a chance to get a little pressure on the quarterback.”
The senior from Broken Arrow played his first four seasons for the Red Raiders. He was an occasional starter in his last two seasons and recorded three pass breakups against Oklahoma State last season.
Horn has started all three games so far this season opposite LaDainian Fields at corner. The secondary was believed to be the strong suit of the defense and through the nonconference portion of the season have proven that sentiment correct.
