I have made several comparisons of this Oklahoma State football team to the team which took the field in the 2018 season. At no point so far this season have I fully known how good this team is or how many games it could win.
There was an interesting tie-in to the 2018 team on Saturday night during the Cowboys 59-0 win over Murray State. Wide receiver Justin Bowick had 178 yards receiving in the first half. The Cowboys receiver to eclipse 150 yards in the first half of a game was Tylan Wallace in 2018 against Texas. Wallace finished the first half of that game with 167 yards.
“Justin practices like a professional,” coach Eric Morris said. “He takes care of his body. He’s the first one here and last one to leave. The way he prepares is phenomenal.”
Wallace and Bowick also each had two first-half touchdowns in their respective games.
The main difference between the two performances is length of time on the field. Bowick sat out the majority of the second half against the Racers so that younger players could take part in the blowout. Wallace was a key part of the 38-35 upset win over the Longhorns.
The benefit of Bowick being that productive in the first half meant that younger players got a chance to see game action and get some plays on tape.
“We got some offensive linemen in there, some young bucks,” Morris said. “It’ll be great to go back and really grade this and it was good to get a lot of people involved in it.”
Bowick was a familiar target for quarterback Drew Mestemaker last week and was talked highly of since he transferred into the program from Illinois. He had 81 yards against Oregon and his previous high in receiving yards was 177 as a freshman at Eastern Illinois against Ut-Martin.
“This was the most receptions I’ve had in a game so I’m really proud of that,” Bowick said. “Obviously it’s always good to have a hundred yards in a game.”
