No News on Oklahoma State Athletic Director Chad Weiberg, Actually Good News
STILLWATER – There is no new news on the Chad Weiberg front. Pokes Report had been holding onto a story since the opening weekend of the football season when we heard from multiple reliable sources that talk among several regents, upper-level administration in the University and at least one prominent donor had taken place regarding Weiberg’s status as Oklahoma State athletics director.
The talk subsided until one of the same sources called me on Monday and reiterated the information and said the situation was moving forward. Then, on Wednesday, Tulsa World senior sports columnist and one of the most respected members of the state’s sports media, Berry Tramel wrote a column containing information that we had and suggested the story was progressing.
We let go with the information we were holding in a story on this site. Since then, Pokes Report, and I am sure others in the media, have been running their traps and consulting any sources they have. There has been no new information we have uncovered other than frequent confirmation that the situation does exist.
Now, nothing new. My hope, although I’m not convinced this will be true, is the light thrown on this situation will deter any action. It often happens when a group of individuals, this centers primarily on a handful of people involved in governance of Oklahoma State University, have their intentions brought to light where everybody sees and hears about it will see the reactions of their potential move. They realize how unpopular their move could be and it stops the move from happening.
Weiberg is a popular figure at Oklahoma State. An alum, he has served as an athletics administrator and fundraiser at three different Big 12 schools. He worked with Hall of Fame football coach Bill Snyder on projects at Kansas State and worked as the deputy to Kirby Hocutt at Texas Tech. He came back to Oklahoma State as the athletic director in waiting under Mike Holder.
His term as AD began on July 1, 2021, and he received a new contract late in 2025 but waited to sign it until April of 2026. His salary ($750,000) remained the same as his first contract despite coaching hires such as David Taylor in wrestling and Jacie Hoyt in women’s basketball. Obviously, his hiring of new football coach Eric Morris looks fantastic.
Weiberg’s family is steeped in Oklahoma sports as his father was a Hall of Fame small college basketball coach. His brother, Jared, died in the Oklahoma State basketball plane crash in January 2001. Another brother is the current basketball head coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
I’m convinced, convinced even more from reading and listening to some internet Oklahoma State sports sites, social media and podcasters that they weren’t aware of what is going on with this story. However, their reporting and talking, some of it fairly outlandish and incorrect, has still served a purpose in the process. The more light on this and potentially the less chance it has to come to fruition.
We will continue to monitor what is going on and report if there is any real movement, but for now it is quiet on any changes inside Oklahoma State athletics.
