STILLWATER – No. 18 Oklahoma State had a surge in the second half to beat UCF 42-28 in the Pokes’ Big 12 home opener. Head coach Eric Morris met with the media following the game to discuss the win.

“We challenged [the defense] at halftime,” Eric Morris said. “I thought we weren't very good on the perimeter, setting edges of our defense early. They hurt us with a lot of perimeter runs and quick passes. Their quarterback did a nice job getting it out into space and making us tackle. It was a weird flow for just kind of the whole entire game. They controlled the clock a bunch of the game. You could tell in the second half their game plan: They want to keep our offense off the field. They huddled. They slowed everything down, which is not really their M.O. I thought we did a nice job stopping the inside run.

“We knew these backs were really good, but I thought that's where the momentum shifted for the whole entire game. It's kind of back and forth, back and forth. Who's going to make a play first? It was just a really heads up play by Evan. He was Johnny on the spot. We teach that and it was super close. I had a great vision of it right down the line and kudos to the referee staff for letting that play out. If you go back and it changes the other way, it is what it is. It was a super close play. He didn't hesitate. He saw the ball on the ground. He picked it up, scooped it and went and made a play with it. I thought that was kind of where we were able to capture the momentum.

“But there are just so many things to clean up. One positive is I thought we were better on third downs offensively. And then two, we had a couple good drives early in the second half where it’s the same old thing, we got to find a way to get in. On both of those drives we had negative plays. We went backwards on a false start and it turned into first and 15. Then the next one, we had a (first-and-goal) from the seven and called a draw. They timed me up on a blitz. It was a great call by them and they were able to hit us in the backfield.

“But the positive is our team’s growing and learning to win. That wasn't, in my opinion, a pretty win by any stretch of imagination. But we're gritty. The coaches did a phenomenal job at halftime making some adjustments, trying to make them a little bit more one-dimensional with what they were trying to do. So hats off to our guys. We're finding ways to win. A lot to clean up, though.”
