The nation’s top quarterback showed exactly why he has earned that moniker this season. Oklahoma State beat Kansas State 66-28 on Saturday afternoon in Manhattan to improve to 6-3 (4-2). Quarterback Drew Mestemaker was in rare form leading the Cowboys offense to score seemingly at will against a Wildcat defense which came in ranked in the top 10 against the pass.
Mestemaker finished with four passing touchdowns to accompany one more on the ground and his first receiving touchdown of the season on a play now dubbed the “Stilly Special.” It was Mestemaker’s school-record eighth straight game with 300 passing yards.
Eight straight games of 300 yards passing and multiple passing touchdowns is the longest streak in Big 12 history. He also extended his streak of 24 consecutive games with at least 200 passing yards which is the longest active streak in the FBS.
Drew found Justin Bowick from 32 yards on the first drive and it seemed to be cruise control after that. He had 118 of his 313 yards in the first quarter. Bowick has now scored in seven-straight games.
Oklahoma State scored 49 points in the first half. That is the most in a first half since 2022 against Central Michigan. OSU also scored 28 points in the first quarter which was the most since 2011 against Kansas.
All four of Mestemaker’s passing touchdowns went to different receivers. Besides Bowick, Caleb Hawkins, Miles Coleman and Morgan McPhaul all cashed in.
Mestemaker’s one blemish happened in the second quarter when Logan Bartley intercepted a pass and took it back for the second Kansas State touchdown of the game.
The second quarter also saw Mestemaker’s third rushing touchdown of the season. He scored from a yard out on the drive following his interception. He only had 11 rushing yards in the game but continued to show his mobility in the pocket to extend plays and wait for receivers to come open.
Mestemaker did not have to play the entire game. Freshman Broderick Vehrs relieved the projected top QB prospect in the fourth quarter.
Mestemaker’s Cowboys are now bowl eligible for the first time since 2023 and welcome Texas Tech to Stillwater next week.
