Oklahoma State Finds Transfer Portal Quarterback Match in Alan Bowman

PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Alaan Bowman will be on Sports Talk with Robert Allen and Friends on Triple Play Sports Radio at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday morning Jan. 10.

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State has found its older, experienced quarterback out of the transfer portal and he is so familiar that he has lit it up throwing the ball twice before inside Boone Pickens Stadium. Former Texas Tech passer Alan Bowman has been at the University of Michigan the past two seasons and the 6-3, 216-pound Bowman has launched all of 11 passes in those two seasons. He did complete eight of those for 69-yards with one touchdown and one interception thrown as a Wolverine.

Bowman, who is 22-years-old and has just one season of eligibility remaining visited Oklahoma State and Stillwater on Saturday (Jan. 7) and looked around. As mentioned, while at Texas Tech, Bowman had a pair of eventful Saturdays in Stillwater.

Pokes Report
Bowman at Texas Tech.

In 2018, his freshman season, he completed 35-of-46 passing for 397-yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions in a 41-17 blowout win by the Red Raiders. Bowman missed competing against the Cowboys in 2019 when he suffered an early season injury at Arizona. In 2020 he returned to Stillwater and while the Cowboys won a track meet 50-44, Bowman completed 31-of-46 passes for 384--yards and three touchdowns with one interception.

To summarize, Bowman in two games at Boone Pickens Stadium was 1-1 in wins/losses and he threw for 781-yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions.

The native of Grapevine, Texas that came out in the class of 2018 has career numbers of 478-of-713 passing for 4,329-yards with 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

In his time in Lubbock, he completed 478-of- 702 passing for 4,280-yards with 32 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

His rushing numbers are much with 46-carries for -9-yards and two touchdowns.

Bowman will have to shake off some game rust as he has played in only four games over the past two seasons, but he has played in and started most of 19 games while at Texas Tech. His record as a starting quarterback is 9-10.

Not hyped about him. Don't hate the idea of having one more QB in QB room. His experience might help. Hopefully he is medically qualified.

Flores said he had no problem with Spencer being here if he came back or a one year experienced Power 5 QB who had one year left! GG is probably the same (he is here for the duration)! Only one who hasn't been heard from is Rangel!

Not sure what they were doing in Michigan, but he was very good at Tech. This is a guy that can play up tempo and hit receivers. This is a very good get. He'll also be great at showing the young ones the tricks of the trade.

This is his one shot to make the NFL, and hopefully he takes full advantage of it.

what is your problem man? Am I not allowed to comment what I think in the posts here or what?

He was very good at Tech. Bad luck with injuries and couldn't stay on the field. Gritty kid that fans and teammates can love. The qbs on the team will need to be ready to play at some point. Gamble worth taking

All things things considered, this is a solid pickup. If the line can protect him we have a chance at a functioning offense in '23. Would have felt better without the WR transfers last week, but we may still be able to salvage this operation and get halfway back on track.

I don't think so. Our QB room was looking pretty thin going into next season with only two scholarship players. Bowman will add depth, and the fact that he only has one year of eligibility remaining should keep from scaring our younger players off.

No one is a given, even GG. Gundy will navigate GG into the coaching ranks and that will at some point include experience outside OSU.

Rangel and Flores both appear good enough to start in D1, and likely P5. Don't think either one will be kept off the field.
Good news is they get to see each other day in day out in practice so will self sort for us. And no, it's not some archaic lack of fealty but simply career development..

Will be fun to see if Bowman can out play Rangel, or if he'll freezes over and GunDunndy run two QBs. Great to have Bowman on the roster.

For what it's worth, Rangel far out ranked Bowman in HS recruiting. .

How are Bowman's legs? Maybe like a Chelf? Or Duggan?

He has a total of 46 rushes for -9 yards in his career. He's definitely a pocket passer. He's been injury prone throughout his career. We're going to have to get our offensive playing at a higher level if we're going to keep him healthy.

Hey Zac did something happen with the locker room project for football? We were told and hyped about it but it was never released to us. The locker room company hasn't even shared the photos. No hype video? Nothing?

I would tend to agree, I think he may start the first couple of games but I expect Rangel or Flores to be the starter by the middle of the season, like I said, insurance policy!

I'm excited about this pickup, but the obvious problem is that our offense is geared towards RPO and they would need to totally revamp the offense to accommodate a passing QB. I don't think they will do that, since they wouldn't do it for Illingworth, and Bowman only has 1 year eligibility.

maybe we get lucky and we change the offense with the hope that Flores has a good enough arm to run it in a year.

RPO doesn't mean a running quarterback. The air raid is filled with RPO's. It looks like we are going back to an air raid type offense.

Well, you know what I mean.... more towards a drop back passer offense.

Didn't Holgy get rid of our TEs when he implemented the air-raid? But we're acquiring TEs, so how would that work with the air-raid?

I do now. I want to get away from the qb run game. Everything else suffers.

well, that's a real helpful statement.

Honestly, I cannot think of even one concern that would cause this to be a disaster.

care to elaborate? (our current scholarship QBs won't care, they fully understood that Sanders could well be the QB in 2023 when they made their decisions to become Cowboys.)

I can't find the posting now, but someone mentioned that we had FOUR OLinemen out with shoulder surgeries and will all be play-ready this season. Can you repost your info/thoughts?

Watched this guy light us up twice in BPS. I'm glad to have him. Hoping this also means we see substantive changes to our offense.

Birmingham and Woodward are the obvious 2, and Woodward's return likely won't happen.

If there are others, I'd like to see it too.... I can't think of any (unless it's "clean up" stuff on a couple of the guys that played a lot.

My ideal handling of the circumstances would be to bring SS back. I am very low on Bowman, I don't think he'll elevate a team to a win total that makes it worth not playing Rangel to get him to Gundy earmarked 20 game mark faster.

Well unfortunately that option is really off the table. You now have to try and win now every year. Taking a rebuilding year is just not possible. We lost what 17 players going 7-6, how many do you think bolt if we go 5-7 or 4-8?
