Oklahoma State Cowboys Fail to Make NCAA Tournament

STILLWATER – After a late fight down the stretch of the season, Oklahoma State men’s basketball has failed to make the 2023 NCAA tournament. They finished the season with an 18-15 overall record and an 8-10 record in conference play.

“They had 18 opportunities in the Quad 1 and they won only six games,” said Chris Reynolds, the NCAA tournament selection committee chair. “They had opportunities in the non-conference schedule to win some games and enhance their resume and they fell short.”

It’s certainly a disappointing end to a once promising season. The Cowboys had a couple of Quad 2 losses early in the season, as well as a 1-4 start to Big 12 play. After that, they rattled off six wins in seven conference games, which included sweeps of Iowa State and Oklahoma, and a ranked win over TCU, as well as seven of eight with an 82-60 blowout of Ole Miss in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

But it was a tough end to conference play that doomed the Cowboys’ chances. They lost a nine-point game to Kansas, 87-76, a 25-point loss to TCU in Fort Worth, 100-75, an 18-point loss to West Virginia in Morgantown, 85-67, a five-point loss to Kansas State in Stillwater and a five-point loss to Baylor in Stillwater to make it five-straight losses.

They snapped that streak with a nice 71-68 win over Texas Tech in Lubbock to finish the regular season.

They kept their tournament hopes alive with a 57-49 win over Oklahoma in the Big 12 quarterfinals, making it a three-game sweep of the Sooners.

However, it was the 60-47 loss to Texas in the semifinals in which the Cowboys shot just 27% from the field and just 14% from 3-point range.

Who are we kidding. We would have been 1 and done. OSU basketball needs to get way better. Looking at the expanded B12 next year, don't see it happening. This program is in trouble.

Love the optimism, but we don't even know who will be on the team next year.

Does any team really know at this point? The portal
giveth and the portal taketh…just look at the football team.

The bigger question is will Boynton still be around? I'm thinking he gets another year, but if they lose in first round of NIT he may get the boot. If he is back, please for the love of god get a real PG out of the portal!

I hear ya, but I think most teams have some idea.... we have to jettison 5 guys just to make room for the rookies we signed... and that's not counting "transfers", and most of our best players can't really transfer. We'll have to get rid of MORE THAN 5 if we want to pick up anybody in the portal.

Our team is a freaking mess, more so than other teams, IMO.

Boynton has not done enough to be retained, but at least we're now as good as North Carolina Tarhills!!!

We're witnessing the culmination of 6 years of recruiting misses, alarming rates of player attrition, and overall POOR player development. It has nothing to do with how the transfer portal changed the game or losing 3 scholarships over 3 years or any other excuses. In my opinion, he's simply not very good, and the problems started in his first recruiting class. His first class was an entire class of knuckle heads and not a single player made it to the end of the season. That was a giant red flag for me, especially considering he was supposed to be an ace recruiter and excellent judge of character.

I think coach Boynton has done great work for the team and the University. In his tenure the tourney was canceled one year and another we were banned (which he had nothing to do with). He's a proven recruiter and culture builder. Cowboy basketball had a long road back and I think he is paving a good road to get us there. Works hard, cares, does things the right way and brings in good talent. Give this just a couple of more years with coach Boynton and I think we'll be back on track.

I think HCMB deserves another year or two but there needs to be great improvement in fundamentals....ball security....free throw shooting...shooting in general especially 3 pointers....beating teams we should beat....advancing the ball past half court in 10 seconds....I like it that we have great athletes but I would like great basketball shooters. Get some shooters and teach them defense.....20 years of disappointment needs to end soon. I have not had season tickets for many years due to just seeing mediocre on the court. Need to exploit the portal even if it means sending several eligible current players down the road. That is harsh but improvement is needed immediately and I do not see it with several of these players. Coaching on fundamentals must also be part of "immediately". GO POKES!!!

Time to stop with the excuse making.

I can't find even one "great work" that he has done... if there was any, it got mired in his black lives matter activism, using the school as his pedestal.

He DID NOT get one year cancelled, that is a failed excuse. The year we were supposed to be banned he signed Cunningham, we got to go to the Tourney, and we were one-n-done. The year we did get banned, we would not have made the dance anyway, we finished stronger with nothing to play for than we did this year, everybody marveled at how he kept the team playing right up to the end.... I guess we had nothing to play for this year too, eh?

We DID NOT have a long road back.... that's just another tired excuse. Coach Underwood had us in the Tournament, and we had good players from Ford that he took over. Boynton took over the Underwood team that went 20-13, and 9-9 (.500) 5th place in conference and made the tournament as a 10 seed. We were already "back", when Boynton took over.

This is the highest paid coach in OSU history, and he as not produced at the level needed to retain that pay.

It does not take 7 years to prove if you've got it... our Ladies Coach did it in ONE YEAR.

This cats clock ran out 2 years ago.

If you want to show support for him for another year or two that is up to you, but enough with the failed excuses. He is not a victim of anything.
