Great stuff Robert! I don't think I've seen this much change going into a season since Gundy replaced Miles 3-yard churn offense, or maybe the switch to Holgy's offense (both huge changes). This year, new defense, new offensive positions (and schemes?), at least 33 new faces, new QB, RB, WR... changes everywhere.

new conference opponents....

your blurb (on paper of course) about the OLine has me a bit concerned still... it sounds like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. The exact same faces just in different positions, with the possibility of Birmingham beating out Wilson at guard if he's healed and in shape.

That makes sense to start spring practice, go with the experience.... I guess we'll all find out what happens with this group come September.

Work hard and strive to get better each practice, short and sweet!!!

Harvey, Birmingham and Cooper offer lots of potential change IF they can win out. But I agree, it would be nice to see a couple more RS Frosh or Soph players pushing this bunch. We don't ever seem to get average or certainly not average + OL play anymore.

If they roll out Springfield and Etienne at tackles again, we're in trouble.

they definitely needed more experience (which they got), and they needed some help inside, which they didn't have but would have if Brooks and Birmingham were playing guard as projected for next year.

it takes 5 guys working together to make an effective OLine, we had lots of issues last year, especially after Woodward went down... we were 7-0 prior to that, and the OLine was not so much of a problem. From then on, Sanders was hurt, over half of the OLine was playing hurt, Brooks was filling in.

Lots of OLine issues last year, hardly fair for a fan to try and place blame on specific players.

Springfield was one of our best rated Pro Football Focus (PFF) linemen. Etienne needed a lot of work, but Robert's article says he has improved with his year of experience, and has potential to improve to NFL level... so we'll see....

What these raw ratings do not show you is if three was any improvement.... e.g., Etienne could have been horrible at the beginning of the season, and much better late in the season, and ended up with the composite grade that he received for the year. Etienne took far more snaps than any Lineman, 96% of all plays on the season.

85 or higher is an NFL-caliber rating,
84-79 is considered "very good."
78-68 is considered "above average."
60 is considered "average" as that is where each player's grade begins and then goes up or down from there.
50-59 Below average grades range
below 50 is considered "poor."

I know it's not set in stone, but by this rating by pff, we have 2 average OLs in the roster which doesn't include transfers. Etienne playing 96% snaps and rating out below average is the most disappointing thing it happened to OL last year including Woodard injuries.

Biggest issue with Etienne last year was not finishing his blocks, not being physical enough and not know what to do when he doesn't have someone to block, as in lined up directly on him on defense. He has to improve a lot this off season to be considered "NFL potential" player. A lot.

New players have to step up in OL for another reason, we will be losing a lot of OL this year to graduation. Need a lot of young guns for next year.
