Big 12 Up to 13 for 2024, What or Who is Next?

STILLWATER – In the war of words that has been going on since Texas and Oklahoma bolted for the SEC and Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff uttered the words, “I haven’t decided if I’m going to shop the Big 12 yet,” Kliavkoff is the loser and the new Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark that started his tenure with the league with the statement, “The Big 12 is open for business,” is your winner.

It’s not like the Big 12 rode into the Rocky Mountains and stole the flagship school in Kliavkoff’s conference, but Colorado represents a big chip. The poker game the two commissioners and their conferences had been playing was one of words and bluffs, but now that the Big 12 has the Buffs, Yormark has a winning hand.

There is movement and it is in the Big 12’s favor and to the detriment of the Pac-12’s future. There is still no word on a multimedia rights contract for the Pac-12, and the current contract is now less than a year from being completed. Big schools like Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Arizona State and the rest of the league need answers. They have coaches to pay, facilities to build or maintain, NIL to build up and keep athletes happy. College athletics isn’t cheap and that is why Colorado made the move.

Colorado back to their roots with the Cowboys and others.

Colorado thanked the Pac-12 today in their good bye for 12-years of providing a conference home to their teams. One college athletics administrator told me on “welcome CU to the Big 12 day” that had Colorado stayed in the Big 12 originally they would have collected (I see this as a conservative number) $71 million more in conference payout dollars over the last decade plus in the Pac-12. That is a big chunk of money in college athletics.

So much for that. Colorado is in and now Yormark needs another new member to even things out. My sources have told me to forget the UConn talk from earlier this summer or the Gonzaga as a hoops member only from last summer. Kliavkoff had best move quickly because his back gate is wide open, and Yormark is proving to be a better poacher.

Brett Yormark has moved past losing Texas and OU.

Arizona is the obvious choice as the Wildcats and the media that covers them have talked up the Big 12 more than anybody, including until recently, Colorado. Arizona is good, but Yormark has always had an eye for all of the four corner schools. My conversations with counterparts at Arizona State have informed me that the Sun Devils are split down the middle on Big 12 or Pac-12. My guess is Big 12 is gaining, but how much?

It blows my mind but Utah, who I see the most value in doesn’t want to be in a league with rival and neighbor BYU. Utah has been emphatically backing the Pac-12.

“I think our words and actions speak for themselves,” Utah athletic director Mark Harlan said recently. “We are a proud member of this conference and look forward to its future success.”

Good luck with that. This is a situation where it might be beneficial to follow the Cougars down from the mountains to the plains.

Oregon is recognized as a “blueblood.”

The prize now is Oregon and Washington. They’ve supposedly been vetted by the Big Ten, but the Big Ten doesn’t want the blood of permanently bringing the Pac-12 to a demise. I’ve got news for all those Big Ten officials and school presidents, the blood has been dripping off of your hands since you grabbed USC and UCLA. C’mon, I can’t buy that message. You guys proved to be piranhas.

Yormark is hot, so keep moving and keep dealing.

I don’t know what will happen, but if I were sitting co-pilot or (shotgun) with the Big 12 boss then I say grab Arizona and head up the Northwest Passgage, follow Lewis and Clark, and grab Oregon and Washington. Make them even happier and further welcomed by adopting Oregon State (better in football this season) and Washington State too.

That adds up to 18. If Arizona State and Utah come to their senses, then the Big 12 is the first to 20. If the Sun Devils and Utes stay pat then they can play in the Mountain West under a new name: Pac-12.

Agree with all you say Robert. Personally would love to see Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State and the Washington's. And I'd love Pittsburgh to balance it all out and bring WV's three river's feud into our conference. Colorado is a bigger plum for the Big XII than some realize IMO. Adding Denver/MTZ TV market impacts, the Deion Sanders national market impact and I recall the days when Colorado was very, very nationally relevant recruiting Texas talent and sending 1st rounders into the NFL. If Sanders health holds up....Colorado will be a force nationally and certainly in our conference within three years I'd be willing to bet. I just hope Big X wandering eyes wouldn't come back towards them, as if I recall, their academics meet Big X preferences.

Pittsburgh is an interesting addition. Would like to see them build their own smaller stadium for a better Gameday atmosphere, but that may be unrealistic. Playing at Heinz Field might be great for the kids to play in an NFL stadium, but the atmosphere wasn't great.

Good analysis!. Definitely target and press Arizona now. Go up north and get Oregon and Washington. If the Big 10 really wanted those two it would have happened by now. The Big 10 wants Notre Dame!. With USC & UCLA that puts them at 16. I totally agree that when they poached USC & UCLA they caused what is happening now and they know it. Tell that to Oregon and Washington. These guys have got to decide if they want to play in the Big 12 or the Mountain West. If we pull in Arizona I bet they make a decision.

do you really think that the B1G would take ND as a "football only" school? (the ACC owns their other sports, and supposedly a clause that says ND must join the ACC in football if they leave independent)

and... why would ND bother, they have their own TV network (NBC), and their own media outlet NBC Sports (just take a visit to that website... ND, all ND and nothing but ND).

and with their essentially guaranteed entry into the bloated playoff, ND definitely does not need the B1G, not at the moment anyway.

You are right, NOTRE DAME has expressed NO DESIRE TO EVER BE PART OF THE BIG UNLESS IT WOULD BE FOR A TRILLION DOLLARS which isn't happening!!! The only way they are forced into a conference membership arrangement if if the College Football Playoff made it a requirement and then I think they would just fold Football into the ACC but keep all of their media arrangements and contracts!

You're right, I had forgotten those developments.

Seems to me the other plum out there that hasn't been picked media market and location wise is SDSU. If our Commissioner could pull them in quickly, it again beats the Pac to the punch, weakens their TV contracting position even further, gives the Big XII a solid S. Cal presence and great travel destination, and gives us the 14 team conference balance. Then, the rest of the PAC will know they have 2, 4 or 6 spots in the Big XII if they act first...as there are 7 to 9 teams we would likely consider to fill out a 16, 18 or 20 member conference. I'm unsure however what money deal we can offer SDSU. I assume it's not a full share but is perhaps pre-determined at some amount in this last TV contract.

With a $34MM exit fee to the MWC if they bail, I seriously doubt SDSU is even a consideration...by either side

yep.... any team that we add at this point costs OSU more money in the near term (6 year contract).

and since SDSU is not a P5 team, then the OSU loss (every team) would be even larger because there would be no pro-rata increase in the TV media deal.

don't you think that they already calculated that when they decided to "not announce" they're leaving?

Meaning: the 34M exit fee would likely be less than going independent until they can land their deal.

SDSU is not without means, as they recently purchased the Old Chargers stadium, razed it, and built a new football stadium and added several academic building at that site. The Basketball arena is big and modern, Tony Gywn baseball park is very good, etc., etc.

They also recently completed efforts to have a more encompassing "Athletic Village", completed a new weight facility, added a basketball practice arena, and they have a statue of their Heisman winner (IMO) Marshall Falk proudly displayed just inside the AD offices.

sue it's a lot of money short term, but not changing to the PAC or B12 would be even bigger money long term.

I like you're thinking here Robert. Is there any scenario where the PAC 12 remains viable P5 Conference if just one more of these schools (AZ, UT, OR or WS) leaves?

didn't the P5 concept go out the window with the expansion of the playoff?

Now, the conference winner or the highest ranked team from the TOP 6 conferences get an automatic invite.

I think P5 was significant in the past because it was 1) the big media dollar conferences, and 2) only 4 of the 5 could expect to make the playoff regularly.

It seems that now we possibly should be talking about P6, or if we're only talking about money, the P2.

Carcass of a conference is all that's left. WashST and Oregon St get a hose job. I hate that.
