Watch: Mike Gundy Discusses 33-7 Loss to South Alabama

Newer coaching staffs at KU, KSU, Texas Tech and TCU all appear to be recruiting and coaching better than Gundy's staff. Unsure if turning over a couple obvious problem staff, OL coach, recruiting coordinator and perhaps Dunn is going to fix this. Portal impact for upcoming season seems scary. What are we selling in terms of coaching and potential impact on players desiring NFL futures.

I think anyone who's watched a lot of football and/or played it can tell you exactly what's wrong....the turrible blocking which all falls on the O-line. Is it coaching or scheme or some of both? We have NOT had a good O-line since Joe Wickline left for UT. And whose fault is that? He wanted to be co-offensive coordinator and wanted a bump in pay, which he deserved!!! The man at the top thought he wasn't worthy due to a huge ego. Buck stops there or naw???

It was Wickline's fault that he left. He took a lateral move, but he did get a pay raise, because Texas has more money than Fort Knox. Wick never got his coveted OC position, despite UT calling him that, he lost his lawsuit against paying us for leaving for a lateral job.

Besides, Wick is out of coaching, so now what?

We'd have been looking for a new OLine coach anyway, so way past time to stop moaning about the past.

Besides, he was let go at Texas, let go at WVU, and let go at Baylor since then. If he was that great, why do you supposed that he hasn't been a stalwart anchor coach at any of those programs?

During the 2020 season, Baylor allowed 19 sacks (an average of 2.1 per game) and scored just 23.33 points per game, rushing for just over 90 yards per game en route to a 2-7 record in Dave Aranda's first season as head coach.


In the season finale against Oklahoma State on Dec. 12, Baylor allowed four sacks and netted just 156 yards of total offense in a 42-3 loss to the Cowboys. It was the first time Baylor failed to score a touchdown since a 38-3 loss to Texas A&M on Nov. 21, 2009.

and that was with Fedora as OC at BU.

I'm not trying to trash Wickline, but it's time for some Cowboys to move on and stop crying about a promotion that nobody else in the college football world gave him either.

Unfortunately, that and $7M can't buy us a win against a team in the SUN BELT CONFERENCE!

I haven't been an OSU fan for as long as some of you (probably since Barry's Heisman year); however, I still have been through my share of tough times, close calls, and disappointing losses. This loss, however, was the most disappointing that I have ever seen.

I remember Gundy saying this was the toughest team they would face thus far. I can't help but think he was saying this as a possible cop-out in case the team lost.

If they had lost by less than 10, I would have said "Good game. Tough loss. Prepare for conference play." If there had been bad calls a la the end of the CMU game, I wouldn't have completely faulted the loss on them.

This loss, however, is bordering on unforgivable. Bad coaching. Bad play calling. 0 points scored for over 45 minutes of game time, and the one TD scored could have arguably been called a "garbage time" score simply based on what happened (or, what didn't happen) afterwards.

Do I think Gundy needs to go? I choose to withhold my decision until the end of the season, because my hope is the team and coaching staff will get their collective acts together and proceed to dominate their opponents in conference play. If they have more losses like this one and/or fail to qualify for ANY bowl game, you will find me among those bearing the torches and pitchforks calling for any number of heads to roll.

At this point, though, it is Nardo's first year, so he is the only one who gets a pass when it comes to getting cut. The rest of the staff who have been there for two years or more, however, will be fair game. You can guarantee I'll be among the first to reach out to the AD and push for the guilty parties to be cut.

If that means calling for Gundy's head, then so be it.

If by some chance Gundy DOES get cut, then it's time for the big-time donors to do like Colorado did to secure Coach Prime. Maybe then the AD can try to snag Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Dabo Swinney or a similar big-time coach with the highest salary in FBS history their current schools won't be able to touch. While he's at it, he can then offer the same level of salaries to their assistants so they can be pulled over to OSU with them.

The most disappointing loss to me was the 2009 lost to Houston in Stilly, the weak after we had just beaten Georgia, in the "opening" of the WEZ, and we were ranked #5.

That team only lost to OU and Texas that year (and Ole Miss in the bowl)

That team was freaking loaded and we went an lost at home to Houston.

(Robinson, Weeden, Toston, Kendal Hunter, Blackmon, Dez, Lane Taylor, Okung, Adcock, Josh Cooper, etc.)

This past game we pretty much knew we were in for a fight, and out performance had been shaky.... that 2009 loss was just a total shock.

Wickline quit recruiting. We've been in recovery from his maleficence. He refused to recruit at UT as well and that was why he's out of coaching. So sorry that's not a valid argument.
