Offensive Line Fix? It is In and the Future from the Room Looks Good

STILLWATER – One thing you can’t do in college football is dump your roster and rebuild it during the season. Yes, I know that Deion Sanders did it at Colorado, but “Coach Prime” did it over seven months and two transfer portal windows. For those believing that Oklahoma State needed to at least rebuild the offensive line after the first three games, and in particular, after the 33-7 loss to South Alabama on Saturday night. Well, you can make those kind of moves in-season.

Robert… for better or worse, it is time for HCMG to select the 22 starters (no matter whose name is on the jersey) and say this is our 2023 team. The team deserves it as do the fans. How can oSu have a true identity otherwise? Can it be adjusted? Of course it can. But make a clear statement and live with the consequences- whether good or bad.

Most inaccurate report and outlook I have ever seen from you Robert, and I know you know better!

We all know what needs to happen. Until it does this is just silly. There is no fix coming from within.

Funny he had to bring up a different line coach to remember when we had a good future.

What about Birmingham at guard? Before the injury he was the best of the bunch

Is this now "FUTURE" as in wait until next year or "FUTURE" as in at least starting to affect the team going forward from this week?

Sounds like next year. Let's just hope they are good enough protect Flores. Biggest concern is Rbs leaving to go to a school where they aren't hit as soon as they are handed the ball. Mainly Gordon

The only real fix for our problems starts with firing Charlie Dickie. Then, bringing in better OL players. Portal is a must, and preferably FBS guys.

After this many years, I'll believe it when I see it. And, frankly, with Dunn calling the plays it won't matter anyway.

Yeah no. We winning like 3 games this season

Robert! Seriously?! Have you watched the games? The o-line is moving nobody off the ball on run plays....NOBODY! The pass pro is below average at best. Shouldn't these 5th year seniors be able to move the line of scrimmage a little bit against two group of 5 schools and a rebuilding ASU? Are you trying to make the point that the o-line is actually good but disguised as awful because of a couple injuries?

Oh wait, I keep forgetting that you are on the Pokes payroll and not objective. My mistake!

Saturday post gonna be like

"Now I know we just lost 48-3 and had 72 total yards of offense, but this is exactly where Mike wants the team"

So starters have injuries. ( Birmingham and Springfield) , Brooks is emotional player. Back ups are not ready in any spots ( Guard or tackle) , but they are supposed to take over with injuries to starters. Young players will be ready in the future, don't know when ( Unless they transfer in the off season since our Oline coach sucks, see Cade Bennett balling for SDSU and mills for Tech, and Etienne , even though he was bad at run blocking, he was good at pass protection)

But it's all going to be alright cause finally we figured out some lineup issue which the staff had all off season to do.

I thought the dirt burglers are good at mental gymnastics, but RA taking it to next level.

The cognitive dissonance it takes for Gundy to say what he said and for you to put this article out is really something.

If MG doesn't make a change and bring in 3-4 FBS OL this offseason we are doomed.

I don't believe that Robert is on the OSU payroll.

I'm almost certain that his sideline duties are as a member of Learfield Sports.

He's made a statement to that effect in the past.

Over on 247 Cody Nagel posted an article about the program. A commenter said there are rumors of players quitting after the game on Saturday (assuming this is to maintain redshirt eligibility). Anyone else heard similar or this guy just blowing smoke?

yeah, that's the OSU haters rumor board.... that stuff is likely best kept over there.

Nagel is a Nebraska fan and doesn't even work for that site anymore, they hired some new NON-OSU guy.

Fair clarification. Keep in mind though that Learfield works for OSU and no Learfield employee would be too critical of the Pokes if they want to keep their job. Additionally, the media rights holder has to get their media coverage folks approved by OSU. So he is far from objective. But I guess this last article proved that anyway...or that he had some (a lot) cold beverages before writing it.

he's an OSU alumnus, and his son works at OSU as a coach..

we are all far from objective.... it's our Pokes.

IMHO, Robert is objective, and he stays away from subjective speculation and conjecture, which most of the posts on this forum consist of.

Besides, there is noting wrong with a biased opinion and review - but if you're not comfortable with only one view, then get others and compare and contrast. Like any subject.

Thanks for the update on the offensive line. Based on what I have witnessed this week. No truer words can be spoken from the quote below. I have never witnessed players and or coaches being booed at a high school or college level. That happened this past week at the OSU game. I have never witnessed some of the words and statements made on social media in general about OSU throughout this week by people who profess to be fans. It is okay to be frustrated. It is okay to have an opinion. Most have crossed a line though. Words are sharp and lasting use them wisely. There are mediums to voice your frustrations. Be better.... do better.... Go Pokes!!

We gotta couple injuries on the line that's why they been sucking but they are coming back and they switched a couple guys around so now we will be good on the line. None of our young backups are ready to play. Bookmark this tho because it's subject to change

Robert's right that you can't make over a roster mid-season, but that's why it was so negligent of our coaches to not make it over in the offseason. Bringing in new starting caliber OL, especially tackles should have been top priority (and a new OL coach) in the transfer portal. The young pups may not be "ready", but they couldn't be much worse then what we had out there last week.

and how exactly do you identify "starting caliber OL in the portal"?

Do you think that OSU has not been doing that for the last 5 years and more, including this year?

Cooper is starting. (we thought Birmingham coming back would be a boost, but he's not mobile now). We also brought in the kid from UNLV and a JUCO.

Last year we brought in Brooks (the other two did not make it - Weber, Collier)

We've brought in the center Godlevski, and Etienne (now starting for BYU)

Josh Sills before that, and I can go on and on.

we have been hitting the portal for starting caliber OL every year back since grad transfers became the rage.

That makes the coaches responsible for recruiting even more negligent in their duties. Let's face it, Dickey should have been gone a year ago. For whatever reason, he just doesn't seem to be able to get talented guys to come to Stillwater. I've no doubt he's a great guy and a good family man but it's a business based on performance. We need an adrenaline shot to that part of our team.

Business based on performance! Thank god someone finally says it. It's often forgotten. This is year 5 for Dickey to field a good line. He hasn't done it. Performance matters for everyone but ok state apparently

I have to agree with Rodeo Poke here, NAGEL IS IN OHIO as his wife is working on getting a PHD at Ohio State and ISN'T EVEN IN THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA!!! I put him in the same category as T shirt boy Kyle Boone formerly of Pistols Firing who was either let go or fired from that site recently!!! I do think the new guy over at that site who came from Georgia, and was a big Todd Monken fan, is I believe A CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENT TO NAGEL!!! By the way, how is a non premium subscriber getting access to a PREMIUM STORY THAT WE PAY $100 to 120 dollars a year to get exclusively unless they are getting access to the comments only??????

Nagel didn't say it, someone in the comments to his article did. Seems unlikely to be true but I was just wondering if anyone else had heard similar.

Sills was a great transfer pickup and Godlevski was solid too. Brooks has been a mixed bag. This past offseason we brought in only 1 transfer that has competed for significant reps (Cooper), 1 longer term project (McKinney), and 1 juco project (Henry I think?). We have a lot of coaches getting paid a lot of money to evaluate talent. Plenty of other schools seem to do it just fine. And we seem to do it just fine for the most part at other positions.

It seems to me - but who am I -,that Gundy gives us the best chance to win. We need kegs. We have depended on QB legs for so long. The OL needs a QB with legs. But I wonder if HCMG isn't hesitant and indecisive to say his son is the starting QB because of the Bob/Nathan Simons controversy..
Orangeheart72
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I've supported the idea that Dickey needed 5 years to develop a line that was talented and has some injury depth. Thought we would be there this (5th) season based on media stories. But all 3 opponents we've played have looked like they have better offensive lines IMO and I suspect that may continue against ISU. It's too bad as I know Gundy really trusted Dickey's worth to program and Dunn's value is hard to determine with lousy offensive lines year after year.

we did just fine with Weeden and Rudolph standing in the pocket... not so good with Sanders in his first few years. (he did better his last 2 years - when he wasn't out injured)

We need a RB with some vision and break the first hit effort. Warren had it. Hubbard was okay. Hill was okay. but beyond those few, the past several years have been pretty lean on RB contributors.

The all run into the pack and fall down. No jump cuts, no bouncing outside, no vision at all.

Major problem with line, no fear of loosing their starting job so they are playing with apathy.
