Can Oklahoma State Keep This Talented Group of Freshmen Together? It Seems Possible

STILLWATER — Saturday was a great day for Oklahoma State Cowboy basketball as they rolled to a 93-83 upset of No. 19 BYU. While a lot of effort went into the win, obviously, it seemed to come easy for the Pokes, especially the freshmen duo of Jamyron Keller and Brandon Garrison.

The pair combined for 43 points, both scoring career-highs, Keller with 22 points on a perfect 8-for-8 from the field, 4-of-4 from 3-point range, and Garrison with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field.

Keller saw the start with Bryce Thompson out for the season with a labrum injury.

It’s performances like we saw on Saturday, and throughout the rest of the season from Garrison, which brings up conversations of NIL and opposing coaching staffs across the country trying to recruit players to leave following the season.

Whether it’s happening with staff members, through former high school and AAU teammates or possibly family members, there’s no question the threat of losing this talented class to the portal is real. Or is it?

“It could become a lot of good things if we all just stay together, which we will,” Brandon Garrison said after the 93-83 win over BYU on Saturday. “I feel like we could do some big things here at OSU that haven’t been done before.”

“We’re trying to put a banner up in the gym,” said Keller. “Wrestling, we see y’all, but it’s time for basketball to put one up.”

“These kids are here because they love it here,” Boynton said of the current team. “They all had options [to go elsewhere]. I think they all want to be here. I think most of the guys we’ve recruited during my time here have wanted to be here because they’ve all had great options at other places. I think it says something about them being willing to say that, which is refreshing, probably a little inspiring.”

Can you really put some merit into a mid-February comment from a freshman following an emotional win? Let’s certainly hope you can because when you look at the returners for next season, it should be easy for this coaching staff to go into the portal and bring in talented pieces to go with. That is if the NIL is there. Time will tell on all fronts, especially if the Cowboys can figure out NIL heading into the offseason to aid in bringing in portal talent.

Who are we losing to graduation/eligibility? Wright, Marsh, Hicklen? Thompson said he'll be back for a medical year.

Plus, I believe we have 2 open scholarships now.

We're definitely going to needs some help inside with only Garrison, Dailey and McBride.

A: Doubt it........OSU has had a hard time keeping players here the past decade even before the wide open NIL Wild West. The losses from last year have shown up and is part of the reason for the record this year. College athletics is just a totally different dynamics and is really just semi-pro sports. It is what it is and you have to adjust or get squashed.

I think this year is the perfect example of what happens when you can't keep players on campus. These young guys are going to be really good and if they can keep them on campus with some of the older players who have eligibility, they'll be pretty good next year. But if they have to piece together nearly an entire roster like this did after last year, it'll be another losing record.

I understand the money doesn't come from the program or the university, but they need to work with Pokes With a Purpose and get them some more money or they'll be rebuilding from scratch.

Then you have the whole coaching debate. These players are here because of Boynton, but if the leadership feels he and his staff can't get the job done, then there will be bigger uphill battle to keep these players on campus, NIL money be damned.

My way of rebuilding the basketball program would be to get a brand name coach to Stillwater. Until then you are just throwing away good NIL funds at good new players who are not quite good enough to take you to the next level in Big 12 play. Brand name coach is going to attract the talent that thinks they are headed for the NBA after a few years in college. Can't have a Marcus Smart and a Cade Cunningham on your teams just once in a blue moon. Need to consistently have a few exceptional players. Been a long time since Cowboy basketball has been that way. It starts with the right coach. You need a potential Hall of Fame coach along with some potential NBA players and then your team can compete for a conference championship, qualify for the NCAA tournament and win more than the first round game. Less than that, you are hoping for some kind of miracle or Divine intervention. I stopped watching this team a few weeks ago.
