STILLWATER – As we will do every week of the season and Pokes Report has done for many years we will provide a scouting report on the upcoming opponent. The 2024 schedule for the Cowboys begins with one solid challenge after another. FCS top-ranked and two-time defending champion South Dakota State, hungry SEC team from neighboring state in Arkansas, the team up the turnpike that would love to knock a Power Four neighbor off in Tulsa.

Robert:

The real question in my mind is how well have we self scouted and fixed our shortcomings on both sides of the ball?

We had too many people running wide open in our secondary too often, too much trouble covering backs in the passing game, identifying eligible receivers out of unbalanced sets. We were bad at blitz disguise and execution.

We also were pitiful in 3rd or fourth and short offensively. Just about ANYONE we played stuffed us routinely. Our lack of imagination in sets and play design for short yardage was poor!

We hope those problems were identified and fixed as instructed by our head coach.

People are underestimating the Pokes this year. Watch out! I have a good feeling about this year ... based on the experience, depth and the underlying advantage the Pokes have with Rob Glass as the strength and conditioning guru. In close games Glass gives Pokes the 4th quarter advantage in any tight games.
My prediction for 1st game:
Pokes - 41
Jackrabbits - 17

This team's ceiling is limited by how much if any the defense can improve. The QB can improve, but his ceiling isn't real high. Of those two things the defensive improvement will be the telltale sign of how far we can go.

A good part of the offensive problems last year IMO were caused by AB having some first year learning curve issues as well as rust physically from not playing for about three years. Additionally, our OL had scheme problems earlier on as well as the strange rotation of qb's. Then on top of that, OL injury/illness problems in some games....most notably Texas with lessor depth. I suspect much of that will be substantially improved. Absent a huge injury impact on offense (Bowman/Ollie/a couple receivers) the D will be the question IMO against the SDSU offense (and Ark. and Utah.). I could see a 38-27 or 45-33 type score in this 1st game. Especially if they turn us over like most teams they play!

QB chart

I'm pretty sure that Cam Rising will be Utah's starting QB, who is now back from injury

In 2022, he threw for 3,034 yards, 26 touchdowns

We can be much improved with fewer blown reads/assignments. I'm hoping a lot of that was due to it being the first year in a new defense with a new DC. Our safeties were poor in pass coverage and were picked on constantly but that's the matchup most teams try to scheme and formation you to get vs their WR, so no surprise there.

I'll settle for single digit INT from Bowman over a full season. We run so much inside the 10 that I'd be surprised if he has much over 20 TD in a greatly improved season. Stribling could have a big impact here tho too.

He would have had 10 maybe 11 interceptions instead of the14 he had at the end of the regular season if a couple of receivers, no longer with the team, had either remembered to run the correct route or not forgotten when to make the precise cut and get set to catch the incoming pass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
