STILLWATER – It is uncertain how Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy became interested in the defensive coordinator candidate that Pokes Report has learned could be the hire. It could be former Alabama head coach Nick Saban. It could be former Mississippi State or Florida head coach Dan Muller. It could be former Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino or any number of coaches in the NFL.

- Just got demoted to an analyst role with the Saints
- Got fired the last time he was a college defensive coordinator
- Fans from his former teams hate him

We really need to generate some excitement going into next year. I don't think this hire does that. Hopefully they'll come up big with the OC hire.

A coach who has coached at how many places now? I grew tired reading his bio. Why so many ports of call???

So much for hiring a young, innovative and hungry coach that actually understands NIL and the new college sports landscape. This guy has been in the NFL and might not even know what NIL is …

Ah, the next 2-3 years will tell all.

The Saints were on pace to set an NFL record for the most yards allowed before contact on running plays, which was a direct reflection on Grantham's unit. The defensive line was getting pushed off the ball and not making plays. The lack of development for young draft picks like Payton Turner and Isaiah Foskey speaks for itself.

Did Robert's article earlier say Gundy retained all his hiring power?

" We have also confirmed that Gundy gave up no control over his ability to hire and decide who was going to make up his staff; coaching, analytical, roster building and recruitment, and administrative; in the proposed or negotiated contract. That is a major area that a coach should not give up. Those hires are almost always shared with the athletics director to sign off on, but not restricted or involve any other facet than that."

Like many of you on this board (and elsewhere) - I am not exactly quivering with excitement over the hiring of Grantham. It seems the strongest thing he has going For him, from what I have gathered, is his vast experience. However, although HCMG has not been perfect in his choice of coaches, he has made some excellent picks in the past. He had to have known for weeks that Nardo was going to be jettisoned, thus, he has had plenty of time to look for the right guy. Even after the recent debacle, I still trust Gundy. If he thinks Grantham is the fix, then I will trust his instincts.

This is a 180 from the Nardo hire. He has experience at both the D1 level and NFL. He's had successful defenses in the past at this level and coached under greats. I do not expect us to have a Knowles level defense but an improved defense. I honestly would have loved the cat from NIU but he is a young coach with little experience.

You make a lot of sense! I will hold judgement until after the Spring period in late April when you have the complete new team having gone through workouts and drills which give you more of an indicator on things!

I like the hire. Young and energetic is what we just experienced. We need fundamental, old school hard nosed coaching. That he will bring and expect from his players. The key will be hiring young energetic position coaches that can RECRUIT. He will make sure they coach. This is what we need at the moment.

Won't disagree with that, I'm just saying I doubt it was hurried.

Which kind of goes against all those that were saying Gundy had to be forced to make changes then want to act like he did this in 4 days to "prove" their point. Which I don't think your part of.

Gundy has always been a slow decision maker with hires, remember the angst as he took weeks to make the last hire. So to me the fact he had Grantham ready to go this soon says he had been contacting people and working on this for probably close to a month.

Also we should say Saban and Mullen probably know more about Grantham than everyone that's done a google search and is chipping in on how terrible this is.

Those folks are the ones that have been yelling for coaches to be fired every week since Gundy took the job, and are now saying this is a bad hire because his tenures have all been so short.

Well, RA called me out on his radio show for saying that he got demoted with the Saints. I guess I better provide a source.

Sounds like he and this interim HC who will also be gone after the season ends got along about as well as Jimmy Harrell and Mike Gundy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
