Doug Meacham To Be New Oklahoma State Offensive Coordinator

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State has hired a former Cowboy coach and player to be the new offensive coordinator. Doug Meacham, who was an offensive lineman in Stillwater from 1983-87, then tight ends and inside wide receivers coach from 2005-12, is the new offensive coordinator for the Pokes.

Pokes Report learned that Meacham informed his players at TCU after practice Thursday morning he’s leaving to take the job.

"We are very excited and fortunate to bring Doug Meacham back as our offensive coordinator," coach Mike Gundy said. "He brings years of experience on the offensive side of the football and experience as a coordinator with play calling duties to our team. Doug is very well-respected by his peers in our profession. He will put together an offensive staff that will provide firepower and be fun to watch for the Oklahoma State fans."

Meacham has spent the last four years in Fort Worth at TCU, first as the inside receivers and tight ends coach in 2020, before earning the title of offensive coordinator in 2021. He’s been the inside receivers coach since 2022.

It would be a direct tie for transfer quarterback, Chandler Morris, who played for Meacham in 2021. The Horned Frog offense had a down year in ’21, completing 2,875 passing yards and 19 touchdowns, and 466 carries for 2,364 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns.

Prior to his time in Fort Worth, Meacham was the offensive coordinator at Kansas in 2017 and 2018, being the receivers coach in ’17 and quarterbacks coach in ’18. He came to Lawrence from his first stint at TCU, 2014-16, as the co-offensive coordinator and IWR coach. The Horned Frogs went 12-1 in 2014, finishing 3rd in the country.

Quarterback Trevone Boykin completed 61% of his passes for 3,901 yards and 33 touchdowns, with the offense combining for 4,240 passing yards and 37 total passing touchdowns. As for rushing yards, they combined for 2,689 yards and 32 touchdowns on 501 carries.

Meacham began his coaching career in 1988 as a GA at NEO in Miami, before coming back to Stillwater as a GA/OL/LB coach from 1989-91.

He was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Georgia Military from 1991-96, then the OC/OL coach at Jacksonville State, Henderson State and then Samford from 1997 to 2004.

Our coaching search on offensive side has become a disaster. If Meacham is any good why is he a WR coach on the same school he was OC?

Why was he not given chance when their OC left for Clemson?

What a huge disappointment.

My only hope is that this is a leak from someone in the athletic department intending to stir up all of the inevitably negative reactions to this as a Hail Mary to prevent the hire.

I can dream anyway.

Yikes. UNLV just hired Mullen, so Marion would rather stay as OC at UNLV after he got passed over rather than move to same job at OSU? Ouch!

Turmoil. Gundy may be on hot seat, so why relocate for possibly 1 year stint.

Doug Meacham's play calling duties were stripped away at TCU, and he was fired at Kansas. I wouldn't understand this move at all.

If we're going to hire a former coach, let's go after Mike Yurcich. He had a top 20 scoring offense in 8 of his 10 years as an FBS OC, and he was an excellent recruiter.

Yeah the BoR cost us multiple OC candidates to get their 15 minutes of fame.

Meacham has been successful as an OC in the past, and seems to be a pretty good receivers coach so while not the bright shiny new bauble it may be a great match. He does like to open it up.

Thanks a lot ego driven BOR chairman and and your damn donor swell heads! This is so damn ironic because Mecham left OSU back before 2013 when Yurcich was hired as OC over him! He had very good offenses in the 2014-2016 period under Patterson but I don't really know what he has done lately!

I would much rather have had Yurcich but he may have been one of the three guys that backed away after the BOR fiasco.

He may end up at Michigan!

What happened with Meach at KU taught him a lot…and he didn't get fired at TCU. He resigned to get the OC role at KU and did get fired after 2 years. TCU brought him back. If it's for real it will be great for OSU.

Michigan already hired a new OC.

Yes, I guess I missed seeing that! He is damn good and I wish he was coming here!

Surely, not that is a bad hire, couldn't we get an up and coming OC and not a position coach.

Surely you understand the BoR single-handedly killed potential hire with their public tantrum? If you want to blame anyone, blame J Harrel.
Handled privately, we may have had options.

Not a fan. I just don't see it. There were so many other proven guys with very successful offenses. I get the BOR mucked things up but surely it wasn't so toxic even a guy that just got passed over wouldn't take it. Only good thing that could come from this is John Paul Richardson transfers back.

A couple of questions about your former teammate! Why did Dykes bring in Garret Riley as OC when he was hired as HC and not let Doug continue as a OC or co OC with play calling duties? Also, did he have any role in play calling the last couple of years with Kendall Briles in charge of the offense?

College Coaches DO NOT WANT TO JOIN A STAFF WHERE THE HC IS CONSIDERED ON THE HOT SEAT! They don't want to have to turn around a year later and look for another job because a staff was terminated! Many times you see older retreads end up joining those types of staffs! My God, I remember Bob Simmons last staff was a bunch of coaches in their 50s and 60s who were retreads in their last couple of years of coaching!

Probably they did mess things up this bad. This thing wasn't just about Friday, it was known on Wednesday and there was chatter across the cfb landscape. It showed their complete lack of understanding in how to handle personnel issues and that we live in a world where these types of actions are under a microscope.

From the moment it broke Wednesday night it was everywhere and everyone was wondering how a few disgruntled fans could get a coach with a great 20 year track record fired for one bad season. That 2 day window burnt every bridge that Gundy had built for this program.

And all because a banker from Leedy wanted 15 minutes of fame.

Mike Yurcich is sitting out there unemployed, and his full body of work is better than Meacham's. I just don't get this hire at all. It's mindboggling.

Like I pointed out Doug left OSU for TCU before 2013 because Mike choose Yurcich over both he and Josh Henson!

I'm confused. You just hired two guys almost 60 yrs old and last college jobs as coordinatores were fired. It's not personal towards them but where's the logic? I hope I'm wrong but if this doesn't pan out, I will for the first time be convinced Gundy had lost touch. And I'm a Gundy supporter.

Fair questions…I couldn't tell you. Doug left TCU and KU didn't work the way he hoped it would. He eventually came back to TCU in a position coach's role which speaks to what the current regime thinks of him. They brought him back. They trust him. Mike's track record on coordinators has been pretty good over the years, so either you trust him or you don't. I was on the sidelines for the CU game and watched those kids quit and I'm sure they had given up well before arriving in Boulder. It was 1991 all over again and I lived through that with my own teammates giving up. The game has changed so much in the last few years that I couldn't tell you what the winning formula is. What Doug learned is it takes the right kids to execute the best scheme. Now it's a bidding war with no loyalty and no commitments and in my opinion success all comes down to the kids on the field. I'll always bet on Mike. Same goes for Meach. I'm the wrong guy to press on this one because I have the luxury of being emotional about these decisions. These are my guys. Doug is an OSU guy…I've know him since I was 18 years old and love seeing him get this chance.

The reason I'm not really excited is again like Grantham in my opinion he's not a name that pops off the page for recruits or transfers.

I wish Meach all the success in the world. I remember when he played here and when he coached here. He was a good player and appeared to be a good coach. However, he probably wasn't Mike's first choice. The BOR fiasco totally blew up Gundy's plans and all three candidates backed away. How you do things is every bit as important as what you do.

Go Get 'Em Meach. It is your turn to shine! Looking forward to the team you will put together.

Excellent pick for OC! Doug is battle tested.

He survived working for Gary Patterson and Les Miles.

He can handle adversity. He did a very good job calling plays for the Frogs

and did it from the sidelines.

I do understand it. We still have that same hard core group complaining on a regular basis about Yurcich. So why go hire someone those who constantly complain about are already on fire about.

Kids don't chase after coaches anymore. It's all about the Benjamins! $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Our recruiting doesn't pick up until House is settled and we can spend TV money on roster. Obviously we as a fan base can't come up with the money needed to be competitive. Last year we brought about $5.5M to the table, and that wasn't enough. Bottom half of the Big XII. That's what we have because I don't think any that could weren't chipping in some. But if we can add $15M to that then we can talk about P4 portal guys and 4* HS players.

I agree but say we are in the ballpark for someone money wise with other schools I don't think Meacham and Grantham are going to push it over the edge

Well both have been doing this for a lot of years so they must know something about recruiting as they have been successful at it. No they're not names, but give the money and see what they can do.
