Oklahoma State Hires Cory Patterson As Running Backs Coach

STILLWATER – The entire Oklahoma State football assistant coaching staff is officially being replaced as Pokes Report can confirm the hiring of a new running backs coach, Cory Patterson.

This news comes just a few hours after it was announced head coach Mike Gundy was hiring former Cowboy standout offensive linemen, Cooper Bassett and Andrew Mitchell, as the new co-offensive line coaches.

Patterson was most recently the associate head coach and receivers coach at Purdue, where he coached second-team All-Big Ten selection, Deion Burks. Prior to his time in West Lafayette, Patterson spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Illinois, coaching tight ends from 2018-20 and running backs from ’21-’23.

He had a thousand-yard rusher during his first season as RBs coach with Chase Brown, who posted 1,005 yards and five touchdowns in 2021. Brown had a breakout season in 2022, rushing for 1,643 yards, earning him All-America status and a finalist for the Doak Walker Award.

Patterson looks to have a talented, yet mostly unproven running backs room heading into the 2025 season. Soon-to-be redshirt senior Trent Howland is the most experienced back, rushing for 230 yards and one touchdown on 31 carries in 10 games last season. Freshman Rodney Fields Jr. had 21 carries for 99 yards and one touchdown in four games, preserving his redshirt, while showing a lot of promise. Redshirt freshman Sesi Vailahi had 42 carries for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

Then the Cowboys received a transfer over the weekend from former OU back, Kalib Hicks, who’s set to enter his redshirt sophomore season.

The entire defensive coaching staff was replaced leading into this week under new defensive coordinator, Todd Grantham. Former OSU offensive linemen, and later assistant coach, Doug Meacham, was announced as the new offensive coordinator last week.

New tight ends coach, DJ Tialavea, was announced on Saturday, with it being expected Meacham will coach wide receivers, completing Gundy’s coaching staff.

Not happy at all to lose Woz. All he did was put guys in the league and produce stud RBs.

No one on the current staff as probably going to be kept is what was being rumored a couple of weeks ago! The coordinators were going to be allowed to bring in their coaches for the respective positions!

Well, the report was most of the coaches probably wouldn't be retained and the coordinator should be allowed to bring in an assistant or two. It wasn't until the past day or so that Robert believed all the assistants would be replaced. I need to see what Patterson does here in Stillwater, but losing Woz is a big loss. Recruited incredibly well, produced All-Americans, including recruiting a Doak Walker Award winner. He'll definitely land on his feet, probably with a pay raise.

No mention of Hendrix in the list of RBs? Did we lose him?

Our asst. coaches have usually been overpaid. So I doubt that Woz will get paid any better elsewhere. I want to see where Nardo ends up. Dunn, if he is smart, will try to land a job as receivers coach. As I said before in a different way, I hope that the new defensive coaches can teach our pass defenders to glance at the ball when it is in flight. Did we keep the special teams coach?
