Sizing Up the Quarterbacks for Oklahoma State Spring Football

STILLWATER – The schedule is out, and we now know that Oklahoma State will start spring football on Tuesday, March 25 after the return from spring break the week before. In reality, the process has begun with the offseason work. The coaches, including offensive coordinator Doug Meacham and quarterbacks coach Kevin Johns, are on the field and in the meeting room twice a week with the players. It is a dead even start for returners Garret Rangel (redshirt junior), Zane Flores (redshirt soph.

with me throwing a little jest onto the debate.... did you say the 2 QBs with the least experience is who you're leaning towards being the starter...

with all the other unknowns about this team, I guess that sounds about right.

I don't think Mike will ever make that mistake again. Now, that doesn't mean they won't make a switch after a few games if one can't cut it.

at this point, I'm just hoping that we don't burn through 2 or 3 of them while playing Oregon.

I agree. It is a very tough game I just don't want a guy to make a mistake or two against a really good team and get the hook too early.

It never ceases to amaze me the number of OSU fans that immediately assign a starting quarterback greatness to a kid that has never played one down of Cowboy football.
The unknown is always the All-American according to many of our fans.
I know there are rules, but do we really want to follow them now?

I kept the percentages close because I really feel it is a competition. I expect the battle for the starter's job to be done to two by the end of spring and then by the end of the first two weeks in fall camp to have the starter. Each quarterback has basic advantage;

Hauss Hejny - Speed, lots of speed.
Zan Flores - probably the best combination of run and pass.
Garret Rangel - another good combination of run and pass and most experience.
Maealuiaki Smith - strongest arm.

Question: If the starter is down to 2 by the end of spring ball, then are you, by default, suggesting that one or more of the QB may enter the portal for Spring? Football - Spring Window Wednesday, April 16, 2025 - Friday, April 25, 2025

I'm afraid it will be very hard to keep all four quarterbacks, but all four have been resolute about staying, except Hejny, who just arrived.
