STILLWATER – It was highly speculated, but now that the numbers are out next to the names of the new and current football coaching staff for Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State, it is known the salaries for the football staff are less than the previous staff. It is not a big difference with the two coordinators. Previously, Oklahoma State was paying $1.7 million combined to the two coordinators and the number is higher at $2.3 million as Bill Haisten of The Tulsa World requested through open records the contracts of the Oklahoma State assistant coaches. The total cost of the 2025 staff according to Haisten’s story is $12.425 million compared to $13.75 million a year ago.

Head coach Mike Gundy is now making $6.875 million compared to $7.75 a year ago.

Yes, the numbers have been out there in print previously, but the numbers that Haisten requested came back different. It is a smaller investment than the previous staff, but that makes sense as the staff in 2024 had for the most part been at Oklahoma State five years or more. That was the case with almost all coaches except defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo.

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, a veteran coach and previous coordinator in both the NFL and the major college ranks is making $1.3 million. The offensive coordinator, former Oklahoma State assistant and player Doug Meacham, does not have as much experience as a coordinator and is making $1 million annually. Those numbers do not include incentives built into the contract that will earn the coaches more income.

As far as the position coaches, they all are making between $250,000-and-$400,000 in base salary. Below are the salaries of the Oklahoma State position coaches compared top their predecessors.

Current - Previous

Kevin Johns, QB, $400,000 - Tim Rattay, $475,000

Andrew Mitchell, OL, $400,000 - Charlie Dickey, $650,000

Jules Montinar, CB, $350,000 - Tim Duffie, $600,000

Ryan Osborn, DL, $300,000 - Paul Randolph, $475,000

Theron Aych, WR, $300,000 - Kasey Dunn was OC and receivers coach, $1 million

Cory Patterson, RB, $400,000 - John Wozniak, $475,000

D.J. Tialavea, TE, $300,000 - Jason McEndoo, $475,000

Cooper Bassett, OL, $150,000 - Added coach to staff, no 2024 correlation

Kap Dede, LB, $250,000 - Joe Bob Clements, $625,000

Greg Brown, Saf, $300,000 - Dan Hammerschmidt, $500,000

Some (perhaps several) players now making more (some maybe significantly) than the coaches. The new CFB ecosystem - it is the NFL indeed. Whatever - just win baby! Let's get back to being a conference leader/power. Ready for the season.

Two takeaways for me, with reference to the coach's salaries:
1) it is self evident these coaches want to be in Stillwater on Gundy's staff; and
2) Gundy did not overpay them, and left plenty of room for future pay raises based on performance.

Where did all those assistant coaches wind up? Anywhere?
