AP Poll Out, No Surprise - No Oklahoma State and No Votes, Rare Under Gundy

Oklahoma State had no business coming off last season even being considered for a vote, but under Mike Gundy that has been a rare situation.

STILLWATER – The Associated Press Preseason Top 25 Poll came out on Monday morning, Aug. 11. It is a major talking point for the start of a football season. Some believe that the AP poll, USA Today/Coaches Poll, and any preseason rankings like the Football Writer’s Association of America/National Football Foundation Super 16 (which I vote on this year) are data points for the College Football Playoff Committee. I don’t believe they are. I know late in the year that the only poll I look at is the one produced by the CFP Selection Committee.

I don’t believe the administrators, coaches, and the media member on that committee look at the other polls either. I believe it is possible for a school not ranked preseason to make it in the new 12 team CFP (see Indiana).

For the dreamer out there that means if Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy created a college football miracle with his coaching staff and roster massive rebuild then you’re telling me “there’s a chance”.

In the poll Texas is a clean sweep of No. 1 and I’m shocked but this is the first time in the 90-years of the A.P. preseason football poll that Texas has been No. 1.

Oklahoma fans are happy as the coaches left the Sooners out, but the writers and broadcasters have them at No. 18. The Super 16 includes writers, broadcasters, and Hall-of-Famers like former K-State quarterback Michael Bishop, Ohio State running back Keith Byars, Alabama center Barrett Jones, Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson, and Notre Dame defender Chris Zorich.

Ranking Associated Press (1st) Coaches/USA Today (1st) Super 16 FWAA/NFF (1st)
1. Texas (25) Texas (28) Texas (27)
2. Penn State (23) Ohio State (20) Penn State (11)
3. Ohio State (11) Penn State (14) Ohio State (11)
4. Clemson (4) Georgia (2) Georgia (2)
5. Georgia (1) Notre Dame Clemson (3)
6. Notre Dame Clemson (2) Notre Dame
7. Oregon (1) Oregon Oregon
8. Alabama Alabama Alabama (2)
9. LSU LSU LSU (1)

This is just the fifth season of preseason polls where Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State team did not get a single vote in the A.P. Poll. Coming off only his second losing season with the Cowboys at 3-9 and 0-9 in Big 12 play there was no way that the Cowboys deserved a vote.

Pokes Report
Mike Gundy has worked hard to build this program.

Gundy is looking to prove again that he can re-invent himself and his program. Gundy did it in 2014 and his next three teams (2015-2017) went 30-9.

I look at this as a similar situation, but more severe than the 2014 Cowboys, who slipped to 6-6 and won their bowl game in Arizona over Washington to finish at 7-6.

I remember Gundy believing he needed to make changes in the program after that season. He did and now he has made the most changes in his tenure at his alma mater.

Here is Oklahoma State’s history with the 90-years of the Associated Press College Football Poll. It is blatant in its’ message.

Oklahoma State Head Coach Teams Ranked/Highest Ranking Preseason Rankings

The house that Boone Pickens built and paid for, but the house Mike Gundy has made the most popular.

If this doesn’t serve as a history lesson and a proving point for anybody that doubts the prowess and overall success of Oklahoma State football under the leadership of Mike Gundy then I don’t know what can. Beyond Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State has had a limited presence in the A.P. Polls or any other polls for that matter.

Hall-of-Fame head coach Jimmy Johnson did not make an A.P. poll as Oklahoma State head coach.

It is not even close as to how impactful Oklahoma State football has been in the Gundy years versus all of the other seasons of it’s 125-years of existence.

I do not believe there will be an "OSU Christmas Miracle" but do know there needs to be 7-8 wins and a decent bowl. GO POKES!!!

While I agree with you, I want to see how they do against Oregon. That will tell a lot I believe.

LOL, Zero U number 18 in AP and 19 in FWAA coming off a 6-7 season with TWO total wins in conference play!!!

I agree with Pedro Pistola. The Oregon game because of their talent level, even with replacing about half their starters from a year ago, and the venue (they never lose at Autzen) will tell us so much. The Cowboys need to be competitive. They need to be in the game and show both physical and competitive mental toughness. If they are competitive at Oregon and are 2-1 with dominating wins in games one and two, then I will be very anxious to see the conference opener.

"Coming off only his second losing season with the Cowboys at 3-9 and 0-9 in Big 12 play there was no way that the Cowboys deserved a vote. "

WTH?

Comments like this is what makes all of the polls nothing but meaningless fodder.

What in the world does last year have to do with how this team might perform? Just lazy journalism by the voters. Pathetic.

II'm not sure. There's no team in the country that loses every conference game, replaces almost the entire team, lacks starting quarterbacks who've thrown a pass in college, and undergoes a complete overhaul of its coaching staff. That team deserves a vote? Even if you remove the "S" from OSU, that team isn't getting any votes.

I'm optimistic that we're better than what's expected, but I'd be shocked if we finish the season in anyone's top 25.

Arizona State and Indian in 2024!!! Arizona State was 3-9 with ONE conference win in 2023! Indiana was also 3-9 with ONE conference win in 2023, both were CFP TEAMS IN 2024! It shows just how much the portal and even in some cases NIL can impact teams in today's environment! Arizona State brought in something like 45 players out of the portal at the end of 2023 and Indian hired a new Head Coach and Coaching staff in December 2023 and he brought in something like 38 players out of the portal!

now you're doing it.... look at THIS team, not last year's team.

Now, look at those that DID "receive votes", we're not likely better than any of those teams?

I'm not a rabid homer, but you just can't look backwards and project the future.

Like I said, that is exactly what is wrong with these types of idiot polls.

I'm wondering who said that Oklahoma State deserved a vote. Not me, I vote in the Super 16 poll for the FWAA and NFF. Now way Oklahoma State gets a vote. I don't think they will rise to that level at any point this season, but I do think they can win 6-8 games. They will have to continue to improve and have good fortune. No votes, and I don't know anybody that thinks they should.

nobody said we deserved one I quoted the sentence the first time, this time I'll put the entire paragraph in...

I do believe that is your statement claiming that the Cowboys did not deserve a vote.

Did we end up ranked at any time in any of those other 4 seasons where OSU did not get an AP vote?

If not, my sincerest apology if I misunderstood what you were saying.

I'm sorry. Thanks for your involvement. Yeah, I thought somebody insinuated I thought they should get a vote. I'm a homer, but geesh.
