STILLWATER – We’re less than a week removed from the end of the 2025 season and roster moves are already starting to happen. It was reported on Tuesday morning sophomore safety Landyn Cleveland is planning to enter the transfer portal.

Cleveland confirmed the news via his social media accounts.

Cleveland is originally out of Mansfield (TX) Legacy and was a four-star prospect out of the 2024 class. He chose the Pokes over several other P4 schools, including Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Colorado, Houston, Kansas, Louisville, Michigan, Mississippi State, Missouri, OU, Ole Miss, Penn State, SMU, Texas, Texas Tech and TCU.

This past season as a true sophomore, Cleveland played in all 12 games, recording 33 total tackle, 17 of which were solo stops, 1.5 tackles for loss, two pass break ups, one QBH and one blocked kick.

Another reported player set to enter the portal is freshman safety Jotavion Pierce. Pierce redshirted this past season and didn’t play in any games.

While the portal will open back up in January, expect to see several other players announce they’re entering the portal. We’ll have a transfer portal tracker up soon.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
is it legal to announce that you'll be entering the portal, before the window is open?

It should not be allowed... that is just feeding into the tampering scenario that is supposed to be against the rules.

The NCAA has been very clear. They haven't even opened an investigation. The tampering rule has not and will not be enforced.

it's taking a while, I believe there is still one or more outstanding State lawsuits about that issue, but they will get it resolved, they've been working towards it all along.

but I agree, the enforcement needs to be more defined and more closely monitored.

Tampering has been enforced for tampering, but it's clearly not being enforced very well for football. That whole "agent" thing has to be worked out and defined.

He's an interesting blurb from a quick search about "tampering".

...Each school has a compliance officer to answer any questions those within their athletic department may have about whether something is a potential NCAA violation or not. Or, those within the department have the ability to reach out to the NCAA Academic and Membership Affairs Department, which will provide rules interpretations for specific scenarios encountered on campus or the recruiting trail.

Penalties if a violation was found could be a simple as a fine or as severe as a restriction of duties. For example, Tennessee committed about two dozen Level I infractions over multiple seasons under former coach Jeremy Pruitt. Those include "recruiting rules violations and direct payments to prospects, current student-athletes and their families." Because of the university's cooperation in the investigation, the NCAA said in 2023, Tennessee avoided a postseason ban, but did draw an $8 million fine and a host of recruiting restrictions.

At the other end of the spectrum, but still in the SEC, South Carolina self-reported a Level III violation from a former staffer. The Charleston Post and Courier reported in November 2024: "The violation, according to USC's institutional action sent to the NCAA, said that a football staffer sent a recruiting notice to a four-year prospective student-athlete prior to receiving written notification of the student-athlete's intention to enter the transfer portal." The university accepted penalties that included a one-week ban on recruiting, a four-day reduction in recruiting days in the following spring and rules training.
