Solid Day for the Pokes With the Conclusion of Spring Football
STILLWATER – It was a solid day on the turf of Boone Pickens Stadium as Oklahoma State Cowboy football put a bow on Spring Football with its annual spring finale.
"We had a good day; we got a lot of plays in, got some good work,” said head coach Mike Gundy. “A lot of the young players that needed quality time on that field in front of a crowd got some quality work. So, I felt like we had a great day. We’ve had a good spring as I said earlier. Today is normally a game which is not really much for us practice-wise, but we got to do a practice. So, it worked out good. We got really quality work, and I was excited about the guys and seeing them play today."
While you won’t know exactly what this team is going to look like in August based on the perform, you did get to see some of the younger players in action. Freshmen Ollie Gordon (RB) and Talyn Shettron (WR) both looked good until they each went down with minor injuries.
Gordon was injured on his first play of the 11-on-11 series, while Shettron made a couple of really nice plays across the middle on passes from redshirt freshman, Gunnar Gundy.
Shettron left a more than halfway through the practice with a sprained ankle, which is not believed to be serious. As mentioned above, Gordon left after just one play with a mild shoulder sprain, which is also not believed to be serious. Eli Russ was the third Cowboy who left the field with an injury, which came at the very end of the practice, with a sprained knee. He should be out 4-5 weeks and back in time for the team to start running stadiums again over the summer.
“Ollie had a little, what we call, just a mild little shoulder,” coach Gundy said. “If it was a game, we would’ve put him back in, but we’re not gonna do that in the spring. He’s had a good spring. He’s showing signs of progressing, but he’s a long ways off. He’s just a high school kid.”
Redshirt (super) senior receiver CJ Tate turned quite a few heads today with impressive plays, including hauling in a deep touchdown from freshman quarterback Garret Rangel.
Starting quarterback Spencer Sanders had a decent day, which included running in a touchdown and hitting sophomore Jaden Bray with a nice fade for a score in the back of the east end zone.
He did throw two interceptions, one which was read and picked off by junior corner Jabbar Muhammad, which was taken to the house, and once by Lyrik Rawls when the ball popped out of the hands of receiver Brennan Presley.
Punter Tom Hutton was booming punts in the “halftime” portion of the 11-on-11 period as he was consistently putting punts between the five- and 10-yard lines.
