With Little Room to Gripe, Cowboys Kicker Gets Messed Over by Big 12 Coaches
STILLWATER – With the way Oklahoma State finished the season having lost four of their last five games there is no room to gripe about post season honors in the Big 12 Conference. The official All-Big 12 football team and the postseason honors are voted on by the 10 head coaches in the Big 12 and the only rule is that you cannot vote for your own players. I don’t have any major complaints about the honors.
I was glad to see that safety Kendal Daniels was voted the Big 12 Freshman of the Year on defense with his 69 tackles and three interceptions. He also had 5.5 tackles-for-loss and four quarterback hurries with a fumble forced.
The only Oklahoma State first-team All Big 12 player was safety Jason Taylor II who led the Big 12 with six interceptions and had 87 tackles. He also defended seven passes and had a fumble recovery. The best ball hawker in the Big 12 by far.
The player that got screwed was kicker Tanner Brown. Brown just missed being a finalist for the Lou Groza Award as the top kicker in college football and Brown, a transfer a year ago from UNLV finished the regular season with 21-of-22 field goals made including a 52-yard kick in overtime in the double overtime loss to TCU. He was 1-1 from over 50 and 5-of-6 from beyond 40. Brown was awesome. He was perfect 40-for-40 on extra points.
Griffin Kell of TCU got it and likely due to his game winner in the final seconds against Baylor, but remember the Frogs were down in part due to Kell missing a PAT earlier in the game and TCU had to go for two after their final touchdown. Yes, a missed extra point.
The Cowboys were shut out on offense, both first and second-teams. Some may think Sepncer Sanders deserved second-team behind Max Duggan of TCU and I would agree with that, but it is not something you can really gripe about. Sanders is very good and was instrumental to his team, but his injury plauged last half of the season was cause to elevate another quarterback and the coaches did. Sanders got votes as evidenced by his honorable mention.
I was glad to see defensive ends Broack Martin, Collin Oliver, linebacker Mason Cobb in his first year as a starter, and Daniels was a second-team safety.
