ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12 Set to Announce Alliance Today (Aug. 24), Pac-12 Driving Force

STILLWATER – You have to hand it to The Athletic and reporter Nicole Auerbach as the reporting on this alliance between the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, and Pac-12 has been spot on. It was first announced last Friday and then since then the stories written have been guessing and projecting what the three major conferences all with fairly new commissioners had in mind with this alliance they were discussing. A source did tell ESPN that the Pac-12 is the drving force in this alliance. "The Pac-12 is driving this,” said the source.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
George Kliavkoff is Pac-12 commissioner.

New Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff has said he wants to make the Pac-12 a better football conference and getting schools that really care about their football. He wants the Pac-12 to enhance it’s chances to make the College Football Playoff and enrich it’s league in the next television rights negotiations..

Hopefully, the impending announcement on Tuesday at 1 p.m. (central) will clear up some of that discussion, but the focus from our sources, which come from outside the three conferences, is that they are most worried about governance and the perceived interest in the Southeastern Conference and their commissioner Greg Sankey on becoming the first conference to go to super conference status with 16 teams by eventually adding Texas and Oklahoma.

We should find out more with the announcement. It could also include sharing of resources and playing opportunities, including scheduling, but all of that is conjecture so far. We do know it leaves the Big 12 as a whole, the remaining eight schools out.

The most important aspect of this is whether it impacts any expansion. My sources and some of those have been in contact with all three of the commissioners involved; Kevin Warren of the Big Ten, Jim Phillips of the ACC, and most recent and important George Kliavkoff of the Pac-12; say it will not effect expansion plans. The Pac-12 is set to announce it’s decision on whether to pursue expansion as early as this coming Friday (Aug. 27).

Pokes Report will keep you updated as we have since this began during SEC Media Days with the announcement of Texas and Oklahoma going to the SEC. We have averaged a story a day on realignment stressing that this will be a longterm solution for Oklahoma State.

so that's it....

there is only one option now.

Invite Cincy, UCF, Houston and either Memphis or USF, and forge our way forward (hopefully without Bowlsly)

I don't know, you could read it another way as well. An alliance may work better if the conferences involved are similar on multiple levels, especially if scheduling is involved. With the PAC12 sitting at two fewer schools they could add two to match up.

ACC has 14 schools, 15 if you count Notre Dame, so they could add WVU and be essentially at 16. B1G could add ISU and KU and get to 16. PAC12 could add us, KSU, and two texas teams and now we are at the four 16 team conferences people have been predicting since the last round of realignment a decade ago.

The last thing we should do is add any more schools to the BIG 12, that should be last resort once it is clear there is no other path forward. To jump into that right now would be potentially signing us up for another massive buyout if a P4 invite came.

it is clear.... realignment was not part of the discussion. Not gonna happen.

it is clear.... they are opposed to expanding the playoff. Not gonna happen.

We are at last resort stage..... okay, okay, I'll cross my fingers and hope that they say no realignment "this year", and leave us with something.. it hasn't been announced yet (just leaked)

.... one last thought... maybe the SEC will choose to move on with total world dominance, and will accept us and WVU out of pure pity.... ( in an attempt to over power the "Alliance")

You may be correct. Dave Wannstedt said on a radio interview earlier that he was told at the Fox Sports/BIG 10 meetings last week that there would be further expansion and basically laid out the exact scenario I mentioned. He left out the Texas schools from the PAC-12, but said that what was said to him at the meetings. Now he could have been mistaken and we know nothing until all is official, but seems like a plausible scenario.

Also, does the conferences no good at all to openly discuss realignment, I mean look at the BS we went through a few years ago where the BIG-12 basically asked schools to pour tons of resources into providing proposals for their universities to join....just to end up looking like a fool when nothing happened. Also, staying status quo in public enhances their negotiating options behind the scenes.

Again, I don't know what will happen and you could be spot on, but still no sense in inviting anyone else until the current GOR is up. There is no more money from the other schools and no need to enter into contracts while the landscape is still shifting a bit.

I agree with you 100%.... but.....

we need a plan (or options at least), Bowlsly needs to be proactive, the GOR deal could end tomorrow, with the goons and horns doing a buy-out (or next year - we don't know).

We sure don't want to be caught flat-footed again. How can we do any sort of "valuation" if we can't even tell a network what the possible configuration might be? How do we know if joining the LBGT-12 would be better than big12 expansion? We can't just sit pat and hope...

If I'm gonna hope... then my hope would be on the SEC dropping the other shoe on the Alliance, sweeping up a few more schools and moving on without the rest of Div 1-A.

Time will tell WTH will happen. If no one wants OSU, and the fly-over remnants of the B12, then lets get on with shoring up what is left and go play football and other sports. The B12 is still a Power 5 conference and expand aggressively. Go play the blue bloods and beat their azzes and deliver an exciting game. Get into the 12 team CFP and win. Join this damn "alliance" and neutralize the SEC until they decide to form their NFL model league. If we get in that, great, if not we do not stop playing. Maybe not financially good but we survive. OSU, TT, TCU and KSU can kick most of the PAC12 teams now, half the SEC, B1G and ACC. So, value that, expand with AAC teams, go beat blue bloods, win in the CFP and produce an exciting product. We will survive in some form, recruit about the same kids now and win.

that sounds good, but you're betting there with house money (past contracts), and we're just about to run out of house money.

you just can't build a 40 acre ranch on 2 acres.

I'm not as optimistic about recruiting the same caliber of kids. I know we don't get a ton of 4-stars and rarely a 5-star, but just about every Group of Five school would kill for our recruits, especially this years if it holds together. A lot of the better 3-stars we get will still be recruited by P4 schools and we will lose out often against them, moreso than now. Our depth could suffer greatly. We may be the best Group of Five school for a while, but I'm just not sure how long that can hold out.

So....OSU does not get invited to one of the Power 4 conferences, OSU just needs to stop playing football, close BPS or do as I wrote? Not being invited to the 40 acre party is not good but having a 2 ac party is better than shutting down BPS. OSU has a lot to offer but the bottom line is the money for existing schools already in the conference. Playing out of a Big 16 conference (B12 remaining 8 plus another 8) is better than calling it quits.

IF we do not make it to one of the other power conferences we could certainly add more schools. But going to a BIG 16 would probably hurt our average payout since we would be splitting with schools that don't currently have the same level of viewership as the remaining Big 8 teams. I would be for looking at 2-4 schools, probably Houston, Cincinnati, and then maybe the two Florida schools.

No point in diluting the TV money any further than that.

But I really hope we don't get to that point.

Actually I don't see how they could admit talking about expansion and not wind up in trouble. Schools have to approach conferences, as how the PAC is talking about considering schools that approached them. As a group if they did admit discussing it it could open them up for legal action.

Crazy Wandstedt said FOX was masterminding a plan sending OSU/KSU to PAC, ISU/KU to B1G, and WVU to ACC. So you can take that for what its worth.

The good news here is that any scheduling benefit is going to be so far off there is no way for the PAC to use it negotiating their next TV deal. In fact its merely an agreement to maybe schedule each other more, there is no coordination or scheduling parameters. So that kills one of the big PAC isn't going to expand because ofs.

This pushes the SEC, and says the new rules will be closer to the old rules, and the playoff isn't going to be as wild and wide open as the SEC wants. And, the B1G/PAC wanting the Rose Bowl to be permanently in the playoffs on 1/1 puts some pretty big limits as that has to be the semi-finals, and it has to include the B1G & PAC champions. So that sure sounds like a 4 team playoff with it being the Rose and the Sugar with the SEC/ACC champ in it. I don't see any larger formula that gets you there outside of it being maybe 8 teams and first round is the bowl games and two rounds after, but that sounds odd. Also you'd have the top 4 playing each other in the first round and the bottom 4 playing each other which is a really odd bracket. Maybe they would have the Big XII and the AAC/MWC champ playing in those other games vs two at large teams? Actually I think that stand is pretty much a playoff killer. Sounds like they'd rather go back to the old way.

The SEC has got to be upset by this news. They now have 16 teams and just got told they will have one playoff spot for their 16 teams. Now all those "blue bloods" will be looking at either be a dynasty or wait 6 or 7 years between playoff appearances.
