Cowboy Commits Dominate in Opening Week of Senior Seasons
For most states in America, this past weekend was the opening weekend of high school football, mostly non-conference or out of state opponents. The opening week was a big one for Oklahoma State commits on both sides of the ball.
Here is a breakdown of the performances from the 2022 commits:
Garret Rangel - QB Frisco Lone Star (TX)
15/18 - 304 yards - 4 Touchdowns
4 rushes - 20 yards
Rangel is one of the best passers in not only the state of Texas, but the country and he showed why last Thursday night as he showed no signs of struggle in an easy rout of Cornerstone Christian, 59-14. Rangel, along with some of their young talent, has Lone Star set for a deep playoff push and a possible state title run.
Ollie Gordon - RB Euless Trinity (TX)
3/6 passing - 76 yards - 2 Touchdowns
8 rushes - 136 yards - 3 Touchdowns
The do-it-all threat showed off just about all of his skills on Thursday as he lined up at quarterback to start the game and incorporating his running game from there. With over 200 total yards and 5 touchdowns, he picked up right where he left off from his junior season with total domination. The Cowboy commit was picked by many to be Texas Player of the Year and he made an early statement proving they were right. Trinity won 45-27.
Talyn Shettron - WR Edmond Santa Fe (OK)
8 catches - 80 yards - 2 Touchdowns
The top receiver in Oklahoma showed why he is considered one of the best in the nation with his two touchdown catches on Friday. His first was a fingertip snag running down the sideline on a deep ball after running right by his defender. The second was a fade ball into the corner of the endzone that caused him to fight through early contact, falling to the ground and securing it as he hit the ground. Shettron was not targeted much in the second half as Santa Fe fell behind to Owasso but when he has the ball in his hands, he’s the best on the field.
Tabry Shettron - WR/TE Edmond Santa Fe (OK)
4 catches - 37 yards
Tabry did not get a whole lot of opportunities in this one but when he did, he made an impact with it. He was used a lot in an H-Back role set up off the line blocking. Some of his targets were errant throws which affected his numbers, but he showed his athleticism and some good open field moves with the ball in his hands.
Dylahn “DJ” McKinney - CB Colleyville Heritage (OK)
2 Interceptions - 1 Pick 6
McKinney showed off his ballhawking skills in his season opener while also showing what he can do once he gets his hands on one. With two interceptions in the game, one being taken back to the house, McKinney helped lead Colleyville Heritage to a 42-7 win. The stat sheet does not list any tackles but with DB’s sometimes tackles are not kept track of in depth. Either way, he made his presence known. McKinney is very long and tall with speed, which makes him all the much harder to beat him in coverage, which clearly did not happen in this one.
Braylin Presley - RB/WR Bixby (OK)
7 rushes - 54 yards
6 catches - 78 yards - 1 Touchdown
1 Punt Returns - 43 yards
It’s crazy to look at this stat line and say he had an underwhelming game compared to his normal output: 175 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. That’s a season best for most kids in high school but for Presley, it’s a nice little season warm up. Playing some tough competition from Texas, Presley did not even play in the second half of the game after Bixby went up big on Mansfield Timberview. They won the game 69-14.
Cameron Epps - CB Chaminade (MO)
1 Tackle
1 Reception - 37 yards
2 Kick Returns - 63 yards
Epps is a massive corner so seeing how little stats he had on defense is not surprising as most teams do not throw at elite corners. He had some plays on offense and special teams too including a 37-yard reception and 63 yards of kick returns. Chaminade won this one 42-20. I would not be surprised if at the end of the year this is what most of his games look like because very teams will test him in coverage, he will make them pay. Chaminade may go with a Kendal Daniels route and just have him start rushing the quarterback and playing closer to the line to have him disrupt play in other ways.
CJ Brown - RB Beggs (OK)
There are no stats at this time for Brown or Beggs, but we do know Beggs fell 52-14 to Lincoln Christian. As stats are updated, we will provide them here.
Austin Kawecki - OL Frisco Lebanon Trail
Obviously, it’s hard to track stats on offensive lineman but we do know Lebanon Trail won 20-14 over their opponent. He is one of the top offensive linemen in the DFW area and it will be interesting to see his continued development over the season.
Mason Gilkey - WR Pawhuska (OK)
No stats available yet for Gilkey but Pawhuska won 55-21 so odds are Gilkey had a lot to do with that. I will update as stats become available.
Landon Dean - Has not played yet
Gabe Brown - Has not played yet
Jaleel Johnson - Has not played yet
