Colleyville Heritage's Weston Smith Is Emerging As One Of Top QB's In Dallas Area
Each year, when I travel to anywhere from 10-20 high school games, my primary objective is to go watch Oklahoma State commits and targets. While I am there though, I am always looking for other players who may showcase their skills at a high level.
Often, if I see a player I like, I will look them up, talk to the coaches and others to find out more and get any information on them.
One of those players that caught my eye this year was 2023 Colleyville Heritage quarterback Weston Smith, who is teammates with 2022 Cowboy cornerback signee Dylahn McKinney.
Smith was not easy to miss as he measures in at 6’5 and 220 pounds.
In the game I was on hand to see in early November, I watched Smith throw for 276 yards and 4 touchdowns on 12/17 passing in a 55-13 win.
On the season, Smith threw for 2,608 yards with 29 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He completed 62% of his passes.
An interesting piece of info is that Colleyville Heritage does not have any other division one prospects on their offense but when Smith was on the field, their offense was one of the best in the state of Texas. In 14 games, the offense averaged 40 points per game.
This was the first season Smith has really had the chance to get noticed because he is fairly new to football. He is originally from Reno, Nevada, where he played as a freshman but only attempted 51 passes that season. He did not play football as a sophomore but when he moved to North Texas, he got back into football and quickly picked up on the game.
What we see right now is purely raw talent. When he gets another off-season under his belt and develops even more, he will be a star.
He does already hold one offer, Florida State, who offered when they saw him in some 7v7 competition the summer prior to his junior season. Some other schools to be in contact are Colorado, Texas Tech, Notre Dame, and Marshall.
I talked with Smith after the game to get some more information and find out what there is to know about him.
“I’m definitely more of a pro-style [QB], I want to get the ball to my playmakers, extend the ball down the field, and light up the scoreboard.”
Smith said the main word he would use to desrcibe himself is “prepared”.
“If you fail to prepare, you will not lead yourself to success, you’re not gonna step up and rise to the occasion. I live by that, I want to be prepared and practice and put in the extra hours.”
I talked with Smith about what he was looking for in a school and a coaching staff as more programs will surely be throwing their hat into the ring of his recruitment.
“I’m looking for a school that really supports their football program, a coaching staff that loves their players and obviously an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach that I can truly bond with.”
In the 2023 class, at the moment, there are not many power five quarterback prospects so it seems that Weston Smith could see a rise this offseason as one of the top signal callers in the area. I expect Smith to pick up some more attention and offers come January and February when coaches and recruiting offices really start to focus on the 2023 class.
Any 6’5 220 pound with a strong arm and very smart is going to be a popular choice.
