STILLWATER – With Georgia beating Alabama 33-18 in the 2021-22 National Championship game, the Associated Press has released its final rankings of the season.

Following a remarkable season, which featured three wins over teams with 11 wins, including Oklahoma in Bedlam and Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, the Cowboys finished the season ranked No. 7.

USA Today also released its Coaches Poll and the Cowboys checked in at No. 7 as well.

Associated Press Top 25

  1. Georgia 14-1 (3)
  2. Alabama 13-2 (1)
  3. Michigan 12-2 (2)
  4. Cincinnati 13-1 (4)
  5. Baylor 12-2 (6)
  6. Ohio State 11-2 (7)
  7. Oklahoma State 12-2 (9)
  8. Notre Dame 11-2 (5)
  9. Michigan State 11-2 (11)
  10. Oklahoma 11-2 (14)
  11. Ole Miss 10-3 (8)
  12. Utah 10-4 (10)
  13. Pittsburgh 11-3 (13)
  14. Clemson 10-3 (19)
  15. Wake Forest 11-3 (20)
  16. Louisiana-Lafayette 13-1 (16)

  23. Iowa 10-4 (17)
  24. Utah State 11-3 (NR)
  25. San Diego State 12-2 (NR)

The Cowboys started off the season a little sluggish as they beat Missouri State, Tulsa and Boise State by a combined 13 points, but the win over Boise State was the breakout of running back Jaylen Warren. He carried the ball 32 times for 218 yards and two touchdowns.

Following non-conference play, the Cowboys beat No. 25 Kansas State 31-20, No. 21 Baylor 24-14 and went on the road and beat No. 25 Texas, 32-24.

They dropped a close one to Iowa State on the road, 24-21, but won the next three games against Kansas, West Virginia and TCU by a combined 119 points.

The Pokes hit the road down to Lubbock, TX on Nov. 20 and shutout Texas Tech, 23-0, which clinched a berth into the Big 12 title game and followed that game up with beating No. 10 Oklahoma in Stillwater for the Pokes’ first Bedlam win since 2014, 37-33.

The Big 12 title game didn’t go the way Mike Gundy and Co. hoped it would as they came up about five inches short, losing to No. 9 Baylor, 21-16.

The Cowboys put the ultimate cap on the season, however, as they upset No. 5 Notre Dame, 37-35, after scoring 30 unanswered points in the largest comeback win in program history.

Based on how the AP "voters" ranked Baylor and Notre Dame, Ohio State should have finished just ahead of Utah, who did everything but outright beat the Buckeyes. A #5 Baylor, #6 Oklahoma State and #7 Notre Dame makes much more sense based on the outcome of the Conference Championship games and the Bowl games. Why Ohio State is stuck in there at #6 makes zero sense, other than the sports media's love of the Buckeyes, come hell or high water. Of course, I still believe Baylor should have been in the playoffs against Alabama instead of CinCin, based on strength of schedule.

Also, what's with all the "gang signs" in the team photo, or am I just an old fuddy duddy who doesn't get it? ha ha

I think you are fuddy duddy Phil

I was hoping for better than 7 but can't make a strong case for it.

Fantastic season pokes

Hard to believe the cyclones did not make top 25 after the season expectations

I thought Cincy should have been #1 or #2, that ND should have been one of the 4, and either UGA or Bama should not have been invited.

at a minimum, UGA should have played Bama in round 1. UGA just wasn't "that good", and Bama lost to freaking Aggies... for goodness sakes. The SEC had a horrid showing in the bowls.

I'm all for getting rid of the playoff completely.
