Cowboy Baseball Evens Series With BYU
ARLINGTON, Okla. – Oklahoma State drew even in its series with BYU Friday night at Globe Life Field as the No. 6 Cowboys were 3-0 winners.
With its first shutout of the season, the Pokes improved to 8-6 and set up a Saturday rubber game, scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start. BYU fell to 8-4 with the loss.
The Cowboys turned in a dominating performance on the mound as Justin Campbell, Kale Davis and Trevor Martin combined to allow just two hits and rack up 19 strikeouts.
The 19 strikeouts are one shy of the Big 12 record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game, which was set by OSU in 2010 when the Cowboys struck out 20 against Alabama A&M.
Campbell was once again masterful as he struck out a season-high 12 batters in six innings of work. The right-hander lowered his season ERA to 2.31 and increased his Big 12-leading strikeout total to 39.
Davis would pick up his first win of the season in relief of Campbell as he came on to open the seventh and struck out four over two scoreless frames to improve to 1-1.
Martin struck out the side in the ninth to record his third save.
In a game that was a pitcher's duel throughout, the Cowboys finally broke through offensively to score the only runs of the game in the eighth inning.
Chase Adkison led the inning off with a single, and Zach Ehrhard reached on a throwing error after a sacrifice bunt. Jake Thompson then reached on a fielding error to load the bases with one out.
After a pop up for the second out of the inning, David Mendham came to the plate and worked a full count before drawing a walk to bring in the first run of the game. Garrett Martin added to the lead with a two-out single through the left side to make the score 3-0.
