Solid Day for the Pokes With the Conclusion of Spring Football

STILLWATER – It was a solid day on the turf of Boone Pickens Stadium as Oklahoma State Cowboy football put a bow on Spring Football with its annual spring finale.

"We had a good day; we got a lot of plays in, got some good work,” said head coach Mike Gundy. “A lot of the young players that needed quality time on that field in front of a crowd got some quality work. So, I felt like we had a great day. We’ve had a good spring as I said earlier. Today is normally a game which is not really much for us practice-wise, but we got to do a practice. So, it worked out good. We got really quality work, and I was excited about the guys and seeing them play today."

While you won’t know exactly what this team is going to look like in August based on the perform, you did get to see some of the younger players in action. Freshmen Ollie Gordon (RB) and Talyn Shettron (WR) both looked good until they each went down with minor injuries.

Gordon was injured on his first play of the 11-on-11 series, while Shettron made a couple of really nice plays across the middle on passes from redshirt freshman, Gunnar Gundy.

Shettron left a more than halfway through the practice with a sprained ankle, which is not believed to be serious. As mentioned above, Gordon left after just one play with a mild shoulder sprain, which is also not believed to be serious. Eli Russ was the third Cowboy who left the field with an injury, which came at the very end of the practice, with a sprained knee. He should be out 4-5 weeks and back in time for the team to start running stadiums again over the summer.

“Ollie had a little, what we call, just a mild little shoulder,” coach Gundy said. “If it was a game, we would’ve put him back in, but we’re not gonna do that in the spring. He’s had a good spring. He’s showing signs of progressing, but he’s a long ways off. He’s just a high school kid.”

Redshirt (super) senior receiver CJ Tate turned quite a few heads today with impressive plays, including hauling in a deep touchdown from freshman quarterback Garret Rangel.

Starting quarterback Spencer Sanders had a decent day, which included running in a touchdown and hitting sophomore Jaden Bray with a nice fade for a score in the back of the east end zone.

He did throw two interceptions, one which was read and picked off by junior corner Jabbar Muhammad, which was taken to the house, and once by Lyrik Rawls when the ball popped out of the hands of receiver Brennan Presley.

Punter Tom Hutton was booming punts in the “halftime” portion of the 11-on-11 period as he was consistently putting punts between the five- and 10-yard lines.

Seemed less than last year, but weather had threatened, windy/cloudy and the baseball game was moved up into a conflict timeframe to beat the weather front. Plus, it was announced it wouldn't be a regular Spring game due to lack of OL players healthy. My guess would be 4 to 5kish. Too bad, not a great showing for recruits who see 50k+ at some spring games. OSU fans are more relaxed about support. Probably good and bad.

my guess is that attendance would have been larger if OSU had been able to have a game.

Personally, I don't think I would ever show up to watch practice... I would have headed over to one of the other events.

Around 3-4k probably, it was pathetic being there. when you look down the road at the fan fair and the 70k they brought it.

See that's the difference in the fan bases IMO. We all should support the kids no matter what. It's the life blood of the program. The recruits that were there and then get on social media and see what happened down the road just laugh at us.

Yeah I definitely hoped for much more. It is kind of embarrassing in all honesty. Especially on the recruiting front. I hope they recruited there asses off cuz the atmosphere surely didn't do us any favors. Pretty small time considering we had such a big year last year. The weather and no game all played factors I'm sure but as a fan base it's not a good look.

naw... don't go all crazy eddie on me... it was a "PRACTICE"

the most people that they've had at a practice all year.

"down South", they had 250 football alumni ON THE FIELD, and they had an "unveiling" of their latest Heisman statue.

plus, THEY HAD A GAME, and interest was high because nobody knows what the heck is happening there.

anybody on social media needs to be laughed at.... nobody looks at social media, except the media, and kids that don't attend anyway.

good gosh.... our fans are not the problem.

Social media is one of, if not the most important thing in recruiting in 2022. It's all about followers, likes, and such. I truly hope you see this. We have taken a giant step forward in the past year and a half. We have a loooong way to go though.

if that is truly the case, then we are doomed from the start.... our fan base can never compete with the teams that regularly have 80,000+ in the stands.

frankly, I'm going to call BS on that claim.

social media has some role, but it's not all that important, nor is it an indicator nor predictor of anything.

Eh..look at the big fish. It takes followers for NIL companies to come in. We will see. Just callin it like I see it and hear it.

this poll is from a survey of Elon Musk takeover of Twitter - this week.

Do you use Twitter?
  • 12%
    Yes
  • 88%
    No
Total responses: 67,349 votes

Not saying it's scientific, but it's closer to reality than assuming social media is relevant, from what I've read and observed.
