There's No Reason to Panic About Cowboy Basketball Yet

STILLWATER – There’s no question that having five players enter the portal over the past few months is a bit alarming. Other than having to kick players off the team a few seasons back and a handful of players transferring out over the years, Oklahoma State has yet to deal with a mass exodus into the transfer portal like what’s going on right now.

Guard Donovan Williams entered the portal shortly after the end of the 2021-22 season, followed by wing Keylan Boone, both of which have committed to play at Pacific.

They were joined in the portal by Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe, who committed to play for Georgia, where former OSU assistant coach Erik Pastrana is now on staff.

Isaac Likekele announced this past week he’s entered his name into the portal as a grad transfer.

All of those players were expected to move on from the program following the season.

Rondel Walker is the latest player to enter his name into the portal and while the timing of it is a bit of surprise, there were rumors towards the end of the season he might enter attempt a transfer.

While he’s not in the portal, point guard Avery Anderson III entered his name into the NBA Draft process, which allows him to talk to scouts and coaches to find out if he’s pro ready yet.

Even with all these players in the portal or draft process, there’s no reason to panic yet.

If you remember back to last season, Mike Boynton and Co. didn’t sign any of the three transfers until after the start of May 2021.

Tyreek Smith signed with the Pokes on May 4, Bryce Thompson committed on May 13 and Moussa Cisse, the Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year didn’t commit to the Pokes until July 15.

If that wasn’t enough to help soothe your worries, here’s a few other tidbits that might help. The majority of the Big 12 is dealing with transfer issues.

As of April 29, the day the news about Walker entering the portal was announced, here’s how the Big 12 looks in terms of transfers.

  • Kansas State 9
  • Iowa State 7
  • Oklahoma 5
  • Oklahoma State 5
  • West Virginia 5
  • Texas 4
  • Texas Tech 4
  • Baylor 1
  • TCU 1
  • Kansas 0

Also, as of April 22, there are more than 1,400 players in the transfer portal. More than most people are comfortable with, but plenty of options to choose from.

Worrisome? A bit. Time to panic? Not yet.

I like the idea of all those guys leaving. I was never impressed with the play of any of them but I did see potential in Boone and Walker. We shall see what Boynton's magnetic personality can come up with now. If he fails to find shooters then the team fails for the next few years and he will be gone. But I see it overall as a great opportunity to create a much better team than what we had last season. Chris Harris remained? Has he ever been healthy for more than a few games? I thought he would transfer for sure.

I hate to see Rondel leaving. He is one of my favorites, showing constant hustle, crafty steals, good defense, and hit some timely 3's. We will miss him if he transfers.

I never think it's time to panic until someone writes an article saying we should not panic and then well....

I don't know what's going on, but it was only 2020 where we brought in EIGHT new players, 6 freshman and 2 transfers. EIGHT.

Only Kuma is left.

We signed SIX in 2019! Anderson, Harris and Ka-Boom are left.

These guys were supposed to be our Jr and Sr players on a deep team.... out of 14 kids, only 4 are left (granted some transfers only had limited years, and Cade was never going to stay long, but still, it's clear something is wrong)

we brought in 4 in 2018, only Likekele remains, maybe. (Yor Anei, Demuth, Calloo) only Calloo was booted for hi-jinx

frankly fellas, I'm at a complete loss for an explanation, but what is happening is totally unacceptable IMO.

Here's a question that I have....

how does all of this impact the team APR?

Is APR even still a thing?

especially regarding the Portal, if a kid enters the portal, and does not get picked up by another team, does that negatively affect our team APR? (seems like it should)

I'm not sure if they issued one in May 2021, due to players/teams holding out due to COVID.

It's really hard to asses as we are in a new era, where kids can and will transfer. You can't count on kids riding the pine for 3 years to get PT as a Sr. They want to be the dominant player on their team and they want it the day they walk in the door. And if a school doesn't make it happen they're going to transfer. These kids grew up playing AAU ball where you can get a new team that works better for you every week, the concept of staying, learning, and growing isn't with them.

Rather than take coaching and try harder, they just hit the portal. We're going to have to learn to live with it. These kids were given opportunities as the lineup was changed throughout the season, but other than a few minutes here and there none of these kids won more pt for themselves.

The new system is going to be bringing in a lot and finding out who plays and who doesn't, then doing it again each year.

I understand your sentiment, but I think you've painted with a bit too-broad of a brush.

Most of these kids (ours and others in the Portal) did not play AAU ball, which is typically for more elite players.

Also, for our situation, some of these kids had played themselves into more PT, and were expected to be significant contributors this coming season.... so that doesn't seem to be it either.

Many of these kids apparently just don't want to spend any more time at OSU.... for whatever reason, PT, buried in the depth-chart, big heads, whatever reason that you choose to believe.

maybe you're correct... perhaps we're destined to bringing in 8, 5, 4, kids every season.

I'm looking more at coach brining in 12 guys to play 1 position (#2 guard), then sitting and wondering why some of the kids can't pick up the other spots. It took Coach 2/3rd of the season to come up with our final line-up, when it was obvious to anybody watching that the mix he was using wasn't productive. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that when you have Likekele standing in the corner waiting for a 3-pt shot, that something is terribly wrong.

fortunately, we have a fairly good core group of players returning for next year, but almost no depth.

I'm pretty sure every kid who goes to college played AAU. HS is the low bench mark for these kids if you don't spend all summer on the circuit you're not getting a scholarship anywhere even NAIA.
