STILLWATER – Like father, like son is how the line goes and it could go deeper in the Holliday family, but suffice now that Stillwater High School record setting baseball senior standout Jackson Holliday has joined his father as an Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year. Jackson is the fifth Stillwater Pioneer to be win the award and that does include his father back in 1998.

Holliday has been a four-year starter for the Pioneers in baseball and has set many school records, but this season he went national as his 89 hits set the National Federation of High Schools single-season record.

Holliday signed with his uncle Josh Holliday and his father, now a volunteer assistant coach with Oklahoma State University baseball. His uncle is the head coach. The dilemma will come this summer as Jackson is a top prospect, even thought to possibly be the number one overall pick in the MLB Amateur Draft in July. Back in the day his father was an eighth-round pick of the Colorado Rockies only because he had signed to play quarterback at Oklahoma State. Holliday did sign baseball and the rest is history as his father had an All-Star career playing with Colorado, St. Louis, and the New York Yankees.

Holliday, a shortstop for Stillwater, has incredible glove skills as well

Jackson batted .685 with 17 home runs and 79 RBI. He is a 2021 Perfect Game All-American Game invitee and a 2021 Team USA 18U National Team member, he compiled a .749 on-base percentage and a 2.141 OPS this spring, while also stealing 30 bases without being caught, and scored 74 runs.

“Jackson Holliday is the most humble, hardest-working baseball player I have ever seen,” Stillwater coach Jimmy Harris said in the Gatorade release. “He has a professional work ethic and the way he trains and takes care of his body is one of his great strengths. His baseball IQ is at a very high level and he really understands how to play the game at a high level.”

Jackson Holliday could end up being the Gatorade National Player of the Year in baseball as that will be announced in the next several weeks.

Unless he is going to sign a guaranteed MLB contract as did A-Rod, why not come to oSu and play for a year or two (or would he have to play three years before going pro?)

didn't his Dad, Matt, go straight to MLB from Stillwater, as a 7th round pick of the Rockies? I don't expect to see Jackson in a Cowboy uniform, but I'll hope until that time comes or passes.

Certain groups of players are ineligible for selection, generally because they are still in school. The basic categories of players eligible to be drafted are:

  • High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college;
  • College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old; and
  • Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed

If I remember correctly, It took a while for Matt to finally get the call up. I think it was after he signed his second contract. I somewhat remember this because everyone was waiting to see if he would come back to be the quarterback.
