GILBERT, Ariz. – When the Oklahoma State Cowboys, on their second day in the Valley of the Sun and preparing for next Tuesday’s Guaranteed Rate Bowl date with Wisconsin, finished their practice on Thursday, head coach Mike Gundy introduced two new members of the Oklahoma State team to the entire team.

A potential new Cowboy that Gundy and Co. would like to learn about is Virginia portal quarterback Brennan Armstrong.

Are the transfers just observers or do they put on pads? Are the eligible to appear in the game?

They'll do some light work at practice and be present for all bowl activities, but won't play in the game.

If portal players practice with the team, does that mean they committed to that team?

I think that's a pretty safe bet.

it was reported that the portal players sign financial aid agreements, but they are not binding until they attend class.

our 7 guys are reportedly committed and signed, but as the way of the portal goes, not obligated.

that's the way that I read it anyway, which is why they can practice and attend bowl activities, but not play in the game.

A practice obligates the player the same as attending class.

Correct. I misstated it.

There is a rule, however, against transferring and playing in a bowl for a new team. Unless a waiver is obtained (it almost never is). A player cannot play for two schools in the same season. And a bowl game counts as the same season.
