Nick Martin and Lyrick Rawls Get Super Team Honors from Texas Football Magazine
EDMOND – A pleasant arrival in the mailbox on Saturday, Jan. 23 was my issue of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Rising Recruiting Guide. An addition to the Texas Football family a couple of years ago, a good friend of mine from the day’s at Scout and 247Sports in Greg Powers is the engine for this issue. Powers has become a huge presence in the recruiting landscape as the President at Next Level Athlete. I go way back with Greg and have always appreciated his attention to detail in evaluating and covering the college football recruiting process. We were always seeing each other as he was headquartered then out of Jenks and me in Edmond. Now, Powers is in the Dallas area and is also the recruiting editor for Texas Football Magazine. One of the things I like about Greg is he has never been the go with the “popular opinion” guy. He has always done his own work and believes in what he sees. That makes his opinion and ratings/rankings much more valuable. For me, I can believe him. I will likely do my own work, but I trust Greg.
Texas Football Rising Recruiting Guide has all nine of the Cowboys 2021 signees from the state of Texas featured with two players making their Tops in Texas Team.
Lyrick Rawls and Nick Martin Jr. both made the Tops in Texas second-team defense.
On Rawls the issue said: “Rawls pulls the trigger quickly to come up in run support and deliver big hits when needed. He shows good range and anticipation. Rawls has a good nose for the football and likes to come up to give the punishing hits.”
On Martin Jr. , who they list as a Utility player they said: “Martin was bit by the injury bug as a junior, but bounced back with a strong senior season that led to his commitment to Oklahoma State. Martin is an impressive physical specimen who likely ends up playing defense in college.”
The other seven players from Texas that signed with the Cowboys were either Super Team nominees or made the magazine.
Raymond Gay of Red Oak: “Quickness and burst immediately come to mind. Gay can change directions in a heartbeat and is quick in and out of his cuts.”
Blaine Green of Allen: “Green combines strong technique and footwork with high level athleticism.”
Bryson Green of Allen: “A physical receiver with the size to compete early on the college level. He is a sure-handed threat with the mental toughness to make contested catches in traffic.”
John Paul Richardson of Fort Bend Ridge Point: “Richardson is a receiver who is a lot of fun to watch. He is an electric route runner who gets in and out of his cuts in a flash.”
Cam Smith of Denton Braswell: “As a receiver he has been Braswell’s big-play threat. On defense he is capable of locking up the opponent’s top receiver.”
Silas Barr of Pottsboro: “A two-way standout in high school, Barr is a definite player to watch… He plays with good punch for a player who has the height and will add the weight in the coming years.”
Jaden Nixon of Lone Star Frisco: “Nixon is an electric offensive weapon, who could be categorized as a slot-back… He is a speedy prospect that boasts a 10.6 in the 100-meters and a 21.08 in the 200-meter dash.”
In the Class of 2022, the Texas Top 100 has these players that the Oklahoma State staff has already offered.
