Cowgirl Softball Is Putting up Gaudy Offensive Numbers To Start 2023

STILLWATER – I think it’s safe to say we all knew Oklahoma State softball would be really good going into the 2023 season. They returned one of the best pitchers in college softball in Kelly Maxwell, as well as a number of multi-year starters, including Kiley Naomi, Chyenne Factor, Katelynn Carwile and Taylor Tuck.

Kenny Gajewski also brought in a handful of very talented transfers and freshmen, which include Lexi Kilfoyl, Rachel Becker, Tallen Edwards and Megan Bloodworth among others.

However, I’m not sure anyone could’ve predicted just how explosive this team would be in the first three weeks of the season, especially from the plate. As a team, the Cowgirls are currently leading the nation with a combined .394 batting averaging.

In fact, the Big 12 has the top four teams in the country in batting with Texas in second with .389, OU in third with .382 and Baylor in fourth with .375.

Through 14 games, grad transfer Rachel Becker is fourth in the country with a .579 batting averaging. That’s 22 hits in 38 at-bats. True freshman Tallen Edwards is hitting .442 in 43 at-bats for the Cowgirls. What makes a true freshman hitting that well is that Edwards graduated high school a year early and is technically supposed to be a senior in high school right now.

Through 14 games, the Cowgirls have combined for 23 home runs, 26 doubles and have posted an impressive 116 RBIs and 119 runs scored. Just going through the games this past weekend at the Troy Cox Classic, the Cowgirls outscored their opponents 39-2.

In fact, up to this point in the season, the Cowgirls have outscored their opponents 119 to 41 in just 86 innings of play. Just keeping up with the math, there are 98 total innings in 14 games. So, not only are the Cowgirls explosive, but their incredibly efficient as well recording seven run-rule finishes.

The Cowgirls will have their chance to extend their hot start this weekend in the OSU/Tulsa Invitational in Stillwater. Friday’s game against No. 23 Missouri at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN+ marks their first game in Stillwater this season. They’ll turn right around and play Maine at 7:30 p.m. CT following the Mizzu game.
