Kalib Boone Enters the Transfer Portal
STILLWATER – Another Oklahoma State senior has entered his name into the transfer portal.
Sources confirmed to Pokes Report that senior center Kalib Boone has entered his name into the transfer portal. This comes on the heels of his twin brother, and former Cowboy, Keylan Boone, being announced as back in the portal after just one season at Pacific.
Boone, who has spent the last four seasons in Stillwater, has played 122 games during his career, starting in 62 of those games. This past season, Boone started 30 of 35 games, averaging 10.8 points on 59% shooting from the field and 76% from the free throw line. He also brought down 5.0 rebounds per game and 1.0 assists per game, while recording 41 blocks.
For his career, Boone averaged 7.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, while recorded 146 total blocks.
As a junior, Boone was second in the Big 12 in blocks with 33, while averaging 5.8 points per game on 57% shooting. As a sophomore, Boone was one of the best players in the Big 12 play as he led the conference with 49 blocks, while re-writing OSU’s single-season field goal percentage by finishing the season shooting 64.2% from the field, a record which stood since 1996-97. He’d finish the season averaging 9.4 points and 5.4 boards per game.
Boone’s been a main stay in Stillwater since arriving as a freshman, but has certainly had his issues with consistency the past two seasons.
“He’s struggled, there’s no question,” Boynton said following the loss to North Texas. “We haven’t quite figured out why, because it was right on the heels of him playing the best basketball of his career. It was kind of a fascinating thing to watch and really kind of sad in a lot of ways for me, knowing the kid. He just couldn’t get it going again. Just simple basketball plays out there that just weren’t being made. So, I was just trying to encourage him that ‘You don’t have to feel like there’s pressure. You don’t have to do this by yourself, you got a whole team, you got a coaching staff, you got teammates. Try as much as you can and go out there and have fun.’”
Boone joins fellow senior Avery Anderson III in the portal, who announced his decision to leave on Tuesday.
It was announced earlier in the week senior guard John-Michael Wright is returning to Stillwater for his final year of eligibility.
As it stands right now, with the four incoming freshmen of Brandon Garrison, Jamyron Keller, Justin McBride and Connor Dow currently signed, plus Eric Dailey Jr. set to sign sometime this month, the departures of Avery Anderson III and Kalib Boone to the portal and Caleb Asberry and Bernard Kouma exhausting their NCAA eligibility, Mike Boynton and Co. current sit at 12 filled scholarships.
There’s still one scholarship reduction that needs to take place as part of the NCAA sanctions, plus it’s certainly possible other players either decide to either try their hand at playing pro basketball or enter their names into the portal. But if all things stay the same, meaning all other scholarship players return, they’ll have one spot to fill.
