Pokes not so much. Our pitching coach looked distraught late in Saturday's game against TCU.
He has time to get things turned around. I believe he can do it.
FORT WORTH, Texas – A seven-run eighth inning doomed Oklahoma State Saturday as TCU handed the 11th-ranked Cowboys a 12-5 loss at Lupton Stadium. OSU fell to 23-10 overall and 7-5 in the Big 12 with the setback, while the Horned Frogs moved to 20-12 and are also 7-5 in the league.
Tyler Wulfert homered and drove in four runs for the Pokes, while Colin Brueggemann had a pair of hits in four at-bats.
Evan O'Toole took the loss on the mound to fall to 3-1 on the season. Starter Juaron Watts-Brown worked five innings, adding six to his Big 12-leading strikeout total while allowing five runs on three hits.
The Cowboys struck first in the second inning. After a leadoff walk to Carson Benge, a single by Brueggemann put runners on the corners. Up next, Wulfert collected an RBI on a groundout to put OSU up 1-0.
The lead was short lived for the Pokes as in the bottom of the frame, a two-out, three-run home run by Kurtis Byrne put TCU on top.
OSU rallied in the fourth to regain control of the scoreboard. Once again, Benge drew a walk, and Brueggemann followed with a single. This time, Wulfert ripped a pitch over the wall in right field for a three-run homer and a 4-3 lead.
The Cowboys weren't done. Marcus Brown followed the round tripper with a triple into the right-field corner and later scored on a wild pitch to extend the OSU advantage to two.
TCU erased that lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice with two outs. The first came when Cole Fontenelle came home on a wild pitch before an RBI double by Elijah Nunez knotted the score at 5-5.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no outs, and a wild pitch by Isaac Stebens brought home the go-ahead run.
The Frogs would tally six more runs in the inning as they collected five hits in the frame to secure the win.
The Cowboys return to action Tuesday when they host Oral Roberts at O'Brate Stadium.
