STILLWATER – Typically you don’t think about the diamond sports in the fall as football and soccer have top billing, but both the three-time in succession NCAA Women’s College World Series participanting Oklahoma State Cowgirls softball team and the back-to-back 40-win and NCAA Tournament Regional hosting Oklahoma State Cowboys in baseball will play home exhibition games this weekend.

Slugging left fielder or DH Nolan Schubart returns this season.

Josh Holliday’s Cowboys are coming off a 41-20 season, their second-straight 40-win campaign, in which the Cowboys earned a 10th consecutive NCAA Regional bid and captured the second Big 12 Conference regular season championship in program history.

Holliday and his staff have been practicing and will play the first of two fall games inside O’Brate Stadium this Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face Division II powerhouse Central Oklahoma from Edmond.

Six position starters from a year ago return for 2024, led by All-American outfielder Nolan Schubart, two-way standout Carson Benge and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Tyler Wulfert. The major questions for the Cowboys will be on the mound where there are 13 new pitchers including six junior college or major college transfers to go with seven freshmen hurlers. Those players are among the overall 23 newcomers to the program, which includes 15 freshmen, five Division I transfers and three from the JUCO ranks.

Later the Cowboys will face Kansas on the same Saturday, Oct. 14 that the Kansas football team will be in Stillwater for a game against the Cowboys. The baseball game will be scheduled once the football kickoff time is known.

Gajewski met with the media this week.

Meanwhile, Kenny Gajewski and his Cowgirls will travel to Conway, Ark. to face Central Arkansas on Saturday and turn around and host rival Wichita State at 3 p.m. on Sunday inside Cowgirls Stadium.

A few position player standouts like Tallen Edwards, Scotland David, and Micaela Wark return to join pitchers like Lexi Kilfoyl and Kyra Aycock. However, Gajewski is anxious to see his transfer and a stellar recruiting class to begin figuring out the puzzle of a line-up for the 2024 season.

“It’s going to be really good for us to see exactly where we stand,” Gajewski told the media earlier this week about playing the games this weekend and beyond. “Right now, we really don’t know much. We have a lot of unknowns. I’m more worried about us rather than the opponents.”
