D.J. McKinney Celebrating Last Week, In the Portal Now at the Deadline
STILLWATER – The NCAA Transfer Portal is about to close as the window ends tomorrow and Oklahoma State is losing one more player as D.J. McKinney of Colleyville Heritage is going in the portal. The 6-0, 180-pound McKinney just finished his red-shirt freshman season and played a lot this season. McKinney started the Tax Act Texas Bowl last Wednesday with senior Korie Black banged up. McKinney finished with two tackles and a pass break up.
McKinney finished this season, as he also played a bunch in the Big 12 Championship Game due to Black going out with a concussion early, with 38 tackles, 24 unassisted. He also had four passes defended on the season.
He played in four games as a red-shirting freshman and and had two tackles. He had five interceptions in his senior season at Colleyville Heritage during the COVID season leading his team to an 8-1 record.
One of his most memorable plays came on a blitz in spring football last March when he jumped up and stole a pass in the end zone for a touchdown. It was one of the best plays that I’ve ever seen made and his teammates went nuts over it. McKinney chose Oklahoma State in his recruiting over offers from Utah, Baylor, Arkansas, Cincinnati. Colorado, Arizona, and Kansas State.
No word on Oklahoma State pursuing a corner in the portal. They have time as there are some out there. The Cowboys also have a lot of talent on the depth chart in the secondary at both corner and safety.
