TAMPA, Fla. – A complete game from pitcher Kyra Aycock and six hits from six different Oklahoma State softball players propelled the Cowgirls to a 6-1 win over South Florida at the USF Softball Stadium in Thursday’s nightcap for the Cowgirls. Earlier in the day, Lexi Kilfoyl threw a complete game two-hit shutout to lead the No. 7/8 Oklahoma State softball team to a 7-0 victory over No. 4/4 Washington as part of the South Florida Showdown.
In the early game, the margin was the second-most lopsided for the Cowgirls over an NFCA top-five opponent and the first shutout of an NFCA top-five opponent since 2017.
After the first four innings went by scoreless, an RBI single from Tallen Edwards broke the stalemate in the fifth. Claire Timm followed with a two-run home run to put the Cowgirls ahead, 3-0. It was her second home run of the season.
OSU tacked on four more in the seventh, thanks to an RBI double from Micaela Wark followed by a three-run home run from Rosie Davis, her third on the season.
Pitching just 30 minutes away from her hometown of Land O’Lakes, Florida, Kilfoyl allowed only two baserunners all game, one of whom was eliminated as part of a first-inning double play. She needed only 80 pitches to defeat the Huskies and improve to 5-2 on the season. Lindsay Lopez took the loss for Washington, falling to 3-1 on the year.
For Kilfoyl, it was her second consecutive complete game shutout victory over a ranked opponent, as she blanked No. 16 Florida as part of a 3-0 OSU win over the Gators earlier in the week.
With the win in the second game of the day over the host USF, OSU improved to 10-2. University of South Florida fell to 7-5.
One of the nation’s top home run-hitting teams, Oklahoma State added three to its season tally with Tallen Edwards, Karli Godwin and Lexi Kilfoyl all going deep against the Bulls. The Cowgirls have hit at least one home run in all but two games this season.
Back-to-back RBI doubles in the second inning from Rosie Davis and Haidyn Sokoloski opened the scoring for OSU before the Cowgirls blew the game open with a solo home run from Edwards – her team-best fourth of the season – and a two-run shot from Godwin in the third. Kilfoyl came on to pinch hit in the seventh and blasted her first home run of the year and the fourth of her career.
Aycock (2-0) held the Bulls to three hits in the game and struck out four batters. Only an unearned run in the seventh kept her from the shutout.
The Cowgirls return to action on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT against Yale in the South Florida Showdown.
