Cowgirls Beat OU and Texas in Same Weekend and 19-0 for Best Start Ever
(This video journal was recorded by Safiya Carrington, NIL journalist for Pokes Report. The story was contributed to by Pokes Report publisher Robert Allen and Oklahoma State University Athletic Media Relations. It is normally kept a premium item, but after a 24-hour wait, we decided to put this out in the clear for folks to see what they are missing from this outstanding young lady in the tennis program.)
NORMAN, Okla. – Hey Pokes Report NIL Journal chapter three and this week we took out the (No. 7) Texas Longhorns and (No. 20) OU Sooners and I’m here with my Cowgirl teammates after the win in Norman. It’s pretty exciting and we have the best fans in the country (she says over and ovation of the Oklahoma State fans that went to Norman for the match) if you didn’t know.
Just to back track on Friday we beat Texas 4-3. It was a pretty close one. We beat them at Indoor Nationals 4-3 but the difference is in Seattle we won the doubles and in this match we didn’t win the doubles point, so we were down 1-0. It came down to 3-3 in the end qith one court left and it was Naz Komar over here (she gestures to Anastaysia Komar) that had to finish the match off playing her fellow country woman (Yanya Sasnouskaya - both are from Minsk, Belarus).
What were the feelings in that match?
“Well when I knew it was coming down to my match, I’d been there already, so I wasn’t really nervous,” Komar answered. “The support for me and my team was great. I felt like we had more fans there than Texas had fans. Clinching for the team is really nice, so i’m proud of my team and myself.”
I don’t think you can say it much better. We are still here in OU territory. We need to wrap it up but I want to take it over to fifth-year senior Ayumi Miyamoto. (Miyamoto clinched the match that was harder than the score would indicate. OSU led 3-1 but the other three singles matches had all gone to a third set. Oklahoma had won the first set in all of those matches and Oklahoma State evened it out. All three were close, but Miyamoto clinched with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.)
Ayumi, what is the first thing that comes to your mind after that match with OU?
“Beating OU is always best!” Miyamoto then just started laughing and celebrating. “It was so fun and great playing in front of everyone.”
It was electric. I couldn’t watch (Miyamoto clinch the match) because I was playing on the other side but I was watching the score but when she got up 5-3 in the third, I knew she had it.
What is the biggest thing about this team, you being here for five-years, what do you think makes this team special?
“Tough, this team is tough,” answered Miyamoto.
They are tough because you don’t go into Austin Texas and Norman, Oklahoma and beat up on the Longhorns and the Sooners in any sport all on one weekend without being tough.
Now, Chris Young’s top-ranked team is 19-0 and the best start of any season in Oklahoma State Cowgirls history.
The Cowgirls will be back in action with a pair of matches next weekend against West Virginia on March 28 and Cincinnati on March 30.
