Oklahoma State Pulls off a Bedlam Recruiting Coup and Gets Gavin Freeman
STILLWATER – This is one out of left field as Oklahoma State now has brought electric slot receiver Gavin Freeman into the fold. The son of former Oklahoma tight end Jason Freeman, he was well-decorated in high school at Heritage Hall earning multiple All-State honors and breaking the records of former Chargers receiver greats like Sterling Shepard and Wes Welker. He decommitted from Texas Tech to walk-on at Oklahoma and proved himself. Now he is in the transfer portal and after visiting Oklahoma State on May 3, has chosen the Cowboys, primarily over Kansas State.
The 5-8, 189-pound Freeman had 4,550-all-purpose-yards at Heritage Hall in his career, and his senior season rocked Oklahoma prep football with 73 receptions for 1,434-yards and 24-all-purpose-touchdowns. He ran the ball and returned punts and kickoffs for Heritage Hall.
At Oklahoma, he played in 13 games as a freshman and had three receptions for 46-yards, 15.3-yards-per-rection and he rushed for 73-yards and a touchdown on seven carries. His sophomore season he played in 13 games and caught 19 passes for 95-yards and a touchdown. He ran for 93-yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Oklahoma used him as a change-up, special plays type of player, but Oklahoma State sees a receiver that could have the same kind of impact as current slot receiver Brennan Presley.
Freeman has two-years to play, and an option could be using a red-shirt season, that he has, to preserve the opportunity for a greater role in his two seasons remaining.
